The " brown-line" reaction on cellulosic ma terials at t he boundary between areas wet with water and dry areas has now been found to be an example of a general phenom enon . Other fib ers and liquids participate in oxidat.ion react ions at wet-dry interfaces. Examples of t he r eactions arc given , t he conditions necessary for t hem are demon strated , and the nature of t he reactions is disc ussed .

It consists at present of nine sections and about 100 technical personnel encompassing some 60 different analytical competences from activation analysis and atomic absorption to vacuum fusion and x-ray spectroscopy.These competences, and in turn the sections which they comprise, are charged with research at the forefront of analysis as well as awareness of the practical sample, be it standard reference material or service analysis. In addition it is their responsibility to inform others of their efforts . Formal publication in scientific periodicals is a highly important output of our laboratories. In addition, however, it has been our experience that informal, annual summaries of progress describing efforts of the past year can be very valuable in disseminating information about our programs. A word is perhaps in order about the philosophy of these yearly progress reports . In any research program a large amount of information is obtained and techniques developed which never find their way into the literature. This includes the "negative results" which are so disappointing and unspectacular but which can often save others considerable work. Of importance also are the numerous small items which are often explored in a few days and which are not important enough to warrant publicationyet can be of great interest and use to
