The diffusion of methanol into atactic poly(methyl methacrylate) is controlled by the interference of the demixing curve with the concentration dependence of the glass transition. Below the temperature of intersection of the two curves, the sample is always in the glassy state and diffusion is of case II. Above this temperature, absorption of methanol brings the sample through the glassy state into the solution state. With increasing temperature, diffusion changes from case II into Fickian. The maximum degree of absorption is determined by the position of the demixing curve in the temperature‐concentration plane.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
