The role of institutions in development discourse when it comes to inclusive development is hotly debated in recent years. Nonetheless, little is known about the role of global institutions in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the context of the global pandemic widely known as the COVID-19 pandemic. Given this information, this chapter will focus on the role of global institutions in promoting the achievement of sustainable development goals in Zimbabwe. This study establishes that global institutions play an enabling role when it comes to the achievement of SDGs in Zimbabwe through developmental policy advocacy and guidance, sensitization and dissemination of information, capacity building, and financing developmental programs. Based on these findings, a plethora of recommendations has been proposed that includes expansion of collaboration, improvement of governance systems and practices, improvement on international co-operation, and unlocking of international finance.
Resilient entrepreneurial strategy is a concept of great importance as it captures how entrepreneurs can ensure business sustainability in the face of harsh economic conditions of a market. In the wake of the economic crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic, it is not surprising to observe that scholars and practitioners are shifting their attention towards entrepreneurial resilience especially in the context of SMEs. With this in mind, this chapter focuses on the resilient entrepreneurial strategies adopted by Zimbabwean SMEs during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study established five strategies, namely strategic alliance, product differentiation, cost containment, innovation, and product differentiation. It is, therefore, recommended that SMEs should harness online technology and constantly re-evaluate entrepreneurial strategies in order to augment their agility to shocks emanating from the business environment.
Cash flow management has increasingly become a concept of interest in the context of small family-owned businesses in recent years. It is worth noting that the growth rate of family-owned businesses has continued to rise in recent years. The research aimed to explore the cash flow management challenges faced by small family-owned businesses in Zimbabwe. The research philosophy of constructivism was employed as it was more appropriate for explorative qualitative study. With the adoption of a qualitative approach, in-depth interviews and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were conducted. The research was conducted on 12 owners of small family businesses from diverse sectors of the economy. Then, thematic analysis was applied to analyze data from in-depth interviews and FGDs. The results show that small family-owned businesses face a myriad of cash flow management challenges. Those challenges are poor payables and receivables management, inadequate cash balances, lack of financial experts, absence of cash budgets, bad debts, cash instability, and Unhu/Ubuntu culture. The research outcomes have practical implications for financial institutions and governments when offering financial management capacity-building workshops. Interestingly, the management of family businesses can make evidence-based decisions related to cash management practices and cash operating cycles. The research can immensely enrich the extant mainstream literature on the family business.
Entrepreneurship appears to be a lucrative career in the post-COVID-19 era given the scaling down of big companies owing to the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although much has been said and written on the role of entrepreneurship in economic development and growth, scant is known about its role in economic recovery from crises. Therefore, this chapter aims to investigate how entrepreneurship education can act as a catalyst for economic recovery in the post-COVID-19 pandemic era. It was observed that entrepreneurship plays a catalyst role in promoting economic recovery through producing enterprising graduates and promoting divergent thinking in solving wicked problems in the post-pandemic era. Nonetheless, it was also observed that the theoretical approach of teaching entrepreneurship was dominant at the expense of the practical approach due to limited resources. The outcomes of this study help practitioners and policymakers in making evidence-informed decisions.
