Using visual behavioral screens in Drosophila, we identified multiple alleles of N-cadherin. Removal of N-cadherin selectively from photoreceptor neurons (R cells) causes deficits in specific visual behaviors that correlate with disruptions in R cell connectivity. These defects include disruptions in the pattern of neuronal connections made by all three classes of R cells (R1-R6, R7, and R8). N-cadherin is expressed in both R cell axons and their targets. By inducing mitotic recombination in a subclass of eye progenitors, we generated mutant R7 axons surrounded by largely wild-type R cell axons and a wild-type target. R7 axons lacking N-cadherin mistarget to the R8 recipient layer. We consider the implications of these findings in the context of the proposed role for cadherins in target specificity.
Classic put-call symmetry relates the prices of puts and calls at strikes on opposite sides of the forward price. We extend put-call symmetry in several directions. Relaxing the assumptions, we generalize to unified local/stochastic volatility models and time-changed Lévy processes, under a symmetry condition. Further relaxing the assumptions, we generalize to various asymmetric dynamics. Extending the conclusions, we take an arbitrarily given payoff of European style or single/double/sequential barrier style, and we construct a conjugate European-style claim of equal value, and thereby a semistatic hedge of the given payoff.
Economic geographies involve the struggle to consume, exchange and produce value through the social construction of material circuits of value capable of being sustained across space and time. They are performed and practised through a constant tension between certain material imperatives of societal reproduction, the potentially infinite, day‐to‐day variability of economic practice, social relations and conceptions of value, and the regulatory and calculable frame of ‘the economy’. Thus economic geographies are subject to more – or less – politically reflexive modes of evaluation and regulation involving multiple, simultaneously‐practised forms and relations of value. They are, therefore, part and parcel of everyday social life, always hybrid and always in a state of becoming. Three vignettes illustrate economic geographies as complex social practices with a constant tendency to incoherence. They demonstrate, thereby, the ordinariness of economies.
Objectives After surgical debulking and volume-directed irradiation of the pelvis/para-aortic lymph nodes, treatment was randomized to compare recurrence-free survival (RFS) and toxicity between two chemotherapy regimens for the treatment of women with advanced stage endometrial carcinoma. Methods Treatment was randomized between 6 cycles of cisplatin [C] (50 mg/m2) and doxorubicin [D] (45 mg/m2) with or without paclitaxel [P] (160 mg/m2). Initially in paclitaxel treated patients and, after May 2002, all patients received granulocyte growth factor with each cycle. Results Of 659 patients enrolled following surgery, 552 eligible patients were randomized to chemotherapy after irradiation. Accrual closed to Stage IV patients in June, 2003. Approximately 80% completed six cycles of chemotherapy. Three deaths resulted from bowel complications and one death was due to renal failure. Hematologic adverse events, sensory neuropathy and myalgia, were more frequent and severe in the paclitaxel arm (p< 0.01) which was confirmed by Quality of Life assessments. Percentage of patients alive and recurrence-free at 36 months was 62% for CD vs. 64% for CDP. The hazard of recurrence or death relative to the CD arm stratified by stage is 0.90 (95% CI is 0.69 to 1.17, p=0.21, one-tail). However, in subgroup analysis, CDP was associated with a 50% reduction in the risk of recurrence or death among patients with gross residual disease (95% CI: 0.26 to 0.92). Stage, residual disease, histology/grade, positive para-aortic node and cytology, pelvic metastases and age were significantly associated with RFS. Conclusion The addition of paclitaxel to cisplatin and doxorubicin following surgery and radiation was not associated with a significant improvement in RFS but was associated with increased toxicity.
