The importance of linguistics is not just for EFL teachers to assist in mastering the concept of teaching. However, the understanding of linguistics should be started with the introductory for EFL Students as a fundamental course to help them build their understanding regarding what they are studying including the trends and gaps of the study in that context. This study aims to analyse trends and gaps in studies regarding teaching linguistics as a subject taught to EFL Students at the university level. This qualitative research applied bibliometrics analysis by collecting relevant studies taken from Publish or Perish and manage to collect 599 articles related to teaching linguistics from Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science databases ranging from 2018-2022; by applying exclusion and inclusion criteria, 367 articles were selected to be analysed using VOSviewer. The result showed the terms for the classroom, technology, foreign language, type, attitude, and literature are the most frequent and mostly discussed by the researchers. While in terms of solution, exploration, contribution, learning process, perception, difficulty, and text seems still gaining less attention compare the others. Therefore, these spots can be seen as research topic opportunity for future researchers to finding the niche. These result implies and also highlights that there are still many interesting topic to be explored regarding the scope of linguistics in language learning.
This research aimed to describe the types and the reason of using Code-mixing by the fifth semester students of English Language and Education Department of Sembilanbelas November Kolaka University in the classroom. The research used qualitative methods. The subject in this research was the fifth semester students of English Language and Education Department of Sembilanbelas November Kolaka University. This research was identified to determine the type and the reason of using code-mixing proposed by Suwito. The data were collected through audio recording and interview. In analyzing the data, the researcher transcribed, identified and classified. In analyzing the data, several steps were done, namely: transcribing, reading, and coding to choose and sort the sentences which were categorized as code mixing. Then, classifying and analyzing the sentence inti different types of code-mixing in the class room. The result indicated that there were 69 utterances of code-mixing used by the students of Sembilanbelas November Kolaka University at fifth semester in teaching and learning activity; 42 code mixing in the form of word insertion, 17 code mixing in the form of phrase insertion, 2 code mixing in the form of hybrid, and 8 code mixing in the form of clause. The study also showed that the reason of using code mixing in the class room which found on the conversation in the class room were; Role Identification which was determined by social condition and educational background; and Varian Identification which was determined by social prestige.
This research was aimed to investigate; (1) the factors of students’ anxiety in speaking English; and (2) the strategies used by the students in overcoming their anxiety in speaking English at the first grade of MAN I Kolaka. This research used a mix method namely quantitative and qualitative. In conducting the research, the researcher collected the data by using questionnaire and interview. The participant of this research were 30 students of class X IPA 1. The result of this research showed that the factors of students’ anxiety in speaking English of MAN 1 Kolaka were communicative apprehension, with mean value (3,82) test anxiety with mean value (3,4) fear of negative evaluation with mean value ( 3,67). The result of interviewed showed that there were five strategies that students used to overcome their anxiety in speaking English such as: preparation, relaxation, positive thinking, peer seeking and resignation.
Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui strategi guru dalam mengajarkan reading comprehension dan bagaimana strategi tersebut diterapkan di kelas X SMAN 04 Bombana. Desain dari penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Subjek penelitian ini adalah guru Bahasa inggris kelas X pada SMAN 04 Bombana. Berdasarkan hasil yang ditemukan, strategi guru dalam mengajar reading comprehension di kelas X SMAN 04 Bombana adalah scaffolding, think aloud dan reciprocal. Strategi scaffolding dilaksanakan dengan memberikan contoh membaca dengan pengucapan yang benar. Kemudian, guru menerapkan think aloud dengan memberikan arahan dan meminta siswa memikirkan pemahaman bacaan mereka. Sementara, Reciprocal dilaksanakan untuk memberikan kesempatan kepada siswa agar lebih aktif dan mandiri dalam memahami teks bacaan.
