Background: The paradigm for corporate health is morphing from traditional curative services to health protection and promotion. An epidemic of "lifestyle diseases" has developed in the India which warrants an organized integration of company's health, safety and environment policy through a directed wellness program. The current study explored the burden and determinants of lifestyle diseases among an organization. Material and methods:A cross sectional study was conducted over 3 months among employees' at a multinational organization in the field information and technology across 10 cities in India. Data was gathered through a semi-structured questionnaire with sociodemographic details (age, sex) and occupational characteristics such as duration of working hours. Biometric measurements such as body mass index, blood pressure, total cholesterol and random blood sugar were documented. Statistical measures obtained included descriptives including means, proportions and percentages.Results: A total of 30,134 employees participated in the study comprising of 16,652 (55.3%) males and 13,482 (44.7%) females. 15,177 (50.3%) belonged to the age group 18e25 years. 24,414 (81%), 4745 (15.7%), 975 (3.2%) had normal, borderline and high risk values respectively for serum cholesterol. 27,660 (91.8%) had blood glucose under normal range, while 2474 (8.2%) were found to be having abnormal blood glucose values. Conclusion:Wellness clinics and occupational health centres act as a fulcrum and since most of the non-communicable diseases could be prevented by modifying the lifestyle factors and the clinics can provide health coaching, tobacco cessation programmes, nutrition, disease management programs.
Introduction: Wellness clinics play a pivotal role in the transforming health status and help in bringing better outcomes of the employees' of an organization. Having a wellness clinic at workplace is an opportunity for the employees' to understand the concepts of health promotion and prevention, in addition to out-patient department. The article shares the experience of wellness clinic established in one of the multinational organization.Materials and methods: Data was gathered from 3 wellness clinics which are across the Hyderabad city of Andhra Pradesh in southern India. The wellness clinics were headed by medical officers, whose primary responsibilities were to manage medical and surgical emergencies, managing referrals, assisting in audits, conducting various preventive health talks and health promotion initiatives for the associates of the organization.Results: There were a total of 6 health talks, about 700 vaccinations, 3 wellness workshops were conducted on healthy heart, eye and ear care and first aid training. Annual medical examination was performed to a total of 1028 the employees. Conclusion:Preventive health and wellness initiatives through medical rooms can unequivocally augment health outcomes among employees. Employers should look at various initiatives in promoting health at work place.
Introduction: Hand hygiene, either by hand disinfection or hand washing remains to be most pivotal in controlling infection in healthcare settings. Simple preventive measures have been proven effective to contain infections. The exiguity on studies done in healthcare settings in India has galvanized us to undertake this study on hand hygiene assessment among nurses in a healthcare setting in India Materials and methods: A cross sectional study was done in one of leading organization in preventive and promotive healthcare in India. . Hand Hygiene Self-Assessment Framework 2010 by World Health Organization was the tool used for the study. The tool had 5 components envisaging education and training, system change, institutional safety, reminders and evaluation and feedback for hand hygiene. Data was entered in Microsoft Excel and percentages were derived. Results: Among 120 medical rooms, 57% of the medical rooms had basic hygiene, while 32% had intermediate hygiene levels and 11% of the medical rooms had advanced hygiene levels. Conclusion: An advanced level of hand hygiene program with elements of infection control should be offered to the all the professionals working in healthcare setting. Cultural and behavioural issues would play in role in low compliance despite of the efforts to improve quality of healthcare.
