The present study analyses growth and chlorophyll biosynthesis in young maize seedlings in response to Zn supply over a wide range of concentrations. Supply of 0 -5 mM ZnCl 2 to 3 days old light grown maize seedlings led to gradually increased accumulation of Zn in the shoot tissue, while in the root tissue substantial increase was observed at/and above 0.1 mM ZnCl 2 . Zn supply significantly reduced the overall growth of maize seedlings mostly at 1 -5 mM ZnCl 2 exerting strong correlation and the observed effect was more substantial for root tissue. Amongst the biochemical parameters, increase in protein and proline content was more prominent in root tissue than the shoot, while RNA content was reduced in shoot tissue. Zn treatment to light grown seedlings significantly increased the chlorophyll, carotenoid content, while in dark grown seedlings it had marginal/no effect. Delta amino levulinic acid (ALA) content in both the regimes was increased at higher Zn concentrations. Also ALA synthesis was increased in both the regimes, but non significantly. Zn enhanced ALA dehydratase (ALAD) activity of light as well as dark grown seedlings being significant in former. The results demonstrate that the Zn accumulation and growth effect at higher Zn concentrations in maize depend upon the tissue with root as the target site and shoot growth are mainly influenced by ALA and subsequently ALAD in maize seedlings.
Two hundred urban teenage girls (15-17yrs) who had attained menarche two years back were selected at random from purposely chosen 1 high school and 4 colleges of Parbhani city, of Maharashtra. The data were collected by personally interviewing the sample girls. The age at menarche of these girls was between 12 yrs. and 13 yrs. Significantly a higher percentage of the middle socio-economic status group (MSES) girls were aware about menarche before its onset and ABOUT menstrual management as compared to their counterpart girls in low socio-economic status group (LSES). Irrespective of the socio-economic status, considerably a lower percentage of the LSES group of urban teenage girls were recorded to have special support particularly with regard to their nutrition, relaxation in doing household chores and affectionate social treatment. The findings of the study advocate that there is a great need to empower girls regarding pubertal changes and how to cope up with them prior to attaining menarche in order to have comfortable and healthy reproductive life. School based sex education programmes are also need to be conducted to provide scientific information about reproductive health care as adolescent girls of today are tomorrow's healthy women, mother, future of the society and great resource of the nation. In Prediabetes blood sugar levels are found to be higher than normal levels. It is considered as pre stage of diabetes as people with prediabetes, if remain undiagnosed, have chances of developing type 2 diabetes. Studies show that if diabetes is treated in the prediabetic stage, it results in complete cure of diabetes. The objective of the present study was to investigate effect of PDBT capsules containing extracts of well-known Ayurvedic plants such as Zingiber officinale, Tinospora cordifolia, Pterocarpus marsupium, Gymnema sylvester, and Momordica charantia on prediabetic condition induced in Wistar rats. High fat fructose diet was fed to male Wistar rats to induce prediabetes. After induction on 11 th week of study, the prediabetic rats were divided in different groups. Treatment groups received Pioglitazone (3 mg/kg) (standard control), test formulation, PDBT capsule (200mg/kg) (test group) along with high fat fructose diet. Normal diet control group received normal diet and high fat fructose diet control group received only high fat fructose diet. The different biochemical parameters, blood glucose levels and body weights were monitored. Animals were sacrificed at the end of study period. Histopathological studies on the major organs such as liver, kidney, pancreas was performed. High fat fructose diet induced of prediabetes in rats. Significant decrease in levels of fasting blood glucose and biochemical parameters in treatment groups was observed. The histopathological study showed no abnormalities. The present research show that PDBT capsules can be efficiently used in prediabetes treatment. Hence, PDBT capsule can be a potential agent for the treatment of prediabetes.
