Redmond, Washington 98073-9701 AB ST RAm Sundstrand has developed a P r e c i s i o n Accele r o m e t e r Alignment and L e v e l i n g System (PAALS); a high-performance m i c r o c o n t r o l l e r c o r r e c t e d a c c e l e r meter t r i a d t h a t o u t p u t s a c c e l e r a t i o n ( f t / s e c ) v i a MIL-STD-1553B communications. 9Combined t i g h t packaging, h i g h r e l i a b i l i t y , a n d h i g h performance r e q u i r e m e n t s were t h e main d e s i g n d r i v e r s . The key system e l e m e n t s are: QA-700 a c c e l e r o m e t e r s , I n t e l 80C196 microc o n t r o l l e r , custom d i g i t a l ASIC, custom h y b r i d , a n d d u a l redundant MIL-STD-1533B communication components. For h i g h performance, t h e QA-700 a c c e l e r o m e t e r s are t h e r m a l l y modeled ( t h i r do r d e r ) € o r b i a s , s c a l e f a c t o r , and alignment. A l s o , t h e h y b r i d ( 3 d i g i t i z e r s ) a r e t h e r m a l l y modeled ( t h i r d -o r d e r ) f o r scale f a c t o r and a u t o m a t i c performance modeling of t h e QA-2000 Q-Flex@ a c c e l e r o m e t e r over 10 y e a r s ago. Since t h e n , he h a s worked on d i g i t i z e r development and o n s e v e r a l microproc e s s o r based i n e r t i a l r e f e r e n c e systems. He prov i d e d t h e t e c h n i c a l d i r e c t i o n i n s e t t i n g up t h e CAD f a c i l i t y t h a t was, i n t u r n , used d u r i n g t h e PAALS development.
