Yeasts were identified from antarctic soil samples. Cryptococcus and Aureobasidium were widely dis tributed and were found in the dry valleys. Fewer yeast species were identified from antarctic soils than have been reported previously from aquatic antarctic samples. In some antarctic soils, yeasts were the dominant microbial populations. Yeasts from antarctic soils have adaptative features that would allow them to grow and survive under harsh antarctic conditions, but we did not identify 'unique' species of yeasts that do not occur in other regions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
