A novel dual-mode ridged substrate integrated waveguide (RSIW) cavity resonator with miniaturized dimension and independently controllable resonant frequencies is proposed. The ridge patch is designed on the upper surface of the bottom substrate, connected with five shorting vias and etched with four slots. Attributed to the ridge structure, the resonant frequencies of the TE 110 and TE 120 cavity modes are down-shifted by 46% and 18%. Moreover, the resonant frequencies of the two modes can be adjusted independently by tuning two vias and the slots on the ridge patch. A dual-band bandpass filter is designed to verify the feasibility of the proposed RSIW cavity resonator. The measured results show two passbands centered at 15.48 and 27.30 GHz with 3-dB-S 21 bandwidths of 6.2% and 5.1%. It confirms the proposed dual-band RSIW filter successfully achieves 62% size reduction compared with the conventional SIW filter without the ridge.
