Our study suggests that the use of tamoxifen results in a more rapid resolution of the symptoms of primary gynecomastia than observation alone. It suggests that tamoxifen is not only safe and effective in reducing the symptoms of gynecomastia, but can also promote complete resolution. The drawback of an observational study is the bias inherent in the fact that the treatment and observation groups were self selected. Randomized controlled trials are required to establish the true efficacy of tamoxifen in the treatment of gynecomastia, the optimum dose and duration of treatment and the true recurrence rate.
