The problem under study is topical and significant because of the needs of modern man in the development of different types of leisure activities and travel in spare time with a rational use of all available tourist resources. The purpose of the article is to identify ethno-cultural aspects of tourism development in the Republic of Kalmykia. The leading method of study is marketing analysis of the recreational areas in the Republic of Kalmykia which allows us to identify ethnic and cultural aspects of tourism development based on Buddhist local colour of the region. The main results of the article present the thorough data analysis of domestic and foreign scientific and methodical literature on the problem of tourism development in Russia and abroad. These results allowed us to draw conclusions about the the tourism development as an environmentally safe form of recreation and travel in the international trade in services. The article has practical value for solving economic, social, demographic and cultural challenges in tourism development. The article also provides knowledge of the folklore and ethnographical traditions of the Kalmyk people.

Повышение уровня общественно-экономического развития сопровождается процессами и тенденциями, увеличивающими значимость отдельных отраслей в социально-экономическом развитии региона. Такие отрасли могут стать основными факторами конкурентоспособности. На наш взгляд, в современных условиях отраслью, способствующей социально-экономическому развитию региона, становится туризм. Цели. Поиск методов повышения роли туризма в социально-экономическом развитии региона, определение вклада туризма в развитие мировой экономики, выявление корреляционной зависимости между развитием туризма и инвестиционной активностью в мире. Методология. В процессе исследования были использованы методы экономического, сравнительного и статистического анализа. Результаты. Выявлено, что сложившиеся в России подходы к развитию туризма как источника социально-экономического развития регионов являются бессистемными и имеют в большей мере фрагментарный характер. Результаты научного исследования внедрены в учебный процесс по дисциплине «Региональная экономика». Выводы. В условиях нестабильной экономики требуется формирование комплексных, взаимосвязанных механизмов использования туристского потенциала России с целью повышения уровня социально-экономического развития регионов.
Аbstract. At the current stage of social development, the choice of strategic priorities for regional development requires a careful analysis of the factors, the choice and justification of those that can become sources of growth in the level of social and economic development of the region. The increase in the level of socioeconomic development, the transition to its new stages and formations, accompanies processes and trends that increase the importance of individual sectors in the socioeconomic development of the region. Such industries can become one of the main factors of the region's competitiveness, increase of its socioeconomic development level, economic specialization in the domestic and international economic space. Among modern trends, which should be noted when choosing the sources of economic growth in the regions can be identified: the creation of conditions for a comfortable life, the desire of society to rationalize the use of natural and recreational resources, increase labor productivity, changes in culture and the value system of the population, increase mobility of the population. In such circumstances, tourism becomes a sector that can become a source of social and economic development of the region.
