This paper describes a novel and miniature probe for monitoring the
velocity of the phase transition in aluminium powder under shock loading.
Experimental results are presented that could suggest an explanation for the
phenomena that are involved, and the possible consequences of these on the
design of flux-compression generators are discussed.
Two boosterless electrification systems have been designed and modelled using Mott MacDonald's in-house multi-train simulator TRAIN to assess the benefits from energy savings through the use of regenerative braking.
