The masses of 31 neutron-rich nuclei in the range A = 29-47 have been measured. The precision of 19 masses has been significantly improved and 12 masses were measured for the first time. The neutron-rich Cl, S, and P isotopes are seen to exhibit a change in shell structure around N = 28. Comparison with shell model and relativistic mean field calculations demonstrate that the observed effects arise from deformed prolate ground state configurations associated with shape coexistence. Evidence for shape coexistence is provided by the observation of an isomer in 43S.
The neutron-rich (66,68)Ni have been produced at GANIL via interactions of a 65.9A MeV 70Zn beam with a 58Ni target. Their reduced transition probability B(E2;0(+)(1)-->2+) has been measured for the first time by Coulomb excitation in a (208)Pb target at intermediate energy. The B(E2) value for (68)Ni(40) is unexpectedly small. An analysis in terms of large scale shell model calculations stresses the importance of proton core excitations to reproduce the B(E2) values and indicates the erosion of the N = 40 harmonic-oscillator subshell by neutron-pair scattering.
The 0 þ 2 state in 34 Si has been populated at the GANIL-LISE3 facility through the decay of a newly discovered 1 þ isomer in 34 Al of 26(1) ms half-life. The simultaneous detection of e þ e À pairs allowed the determination of the excitation energy Eð0 þ 2 Þ ¼ 2719ð3Þ keV and the half-life T 1=2 ¼ 19:4ð7Þ ns, from which an electric monopole strength of 2 ðE0Þ ¼ 13:0ð0:9Þ Â 10 À3 was deduced. The 2 þ 1 state is observed to decay both to the 0 þ 1 ground state and to the newly observed 0 þ 2 state [via a 607(2) keV transition] with a ratio Rð2Gathering all information, a weak mixing with the 0 þ 1 and a large deformation parameter of ¼ 0:29ð4Þ are found for the 0 þ 2 state, in good agreement with shell model calculations using a new SDPF-U-MIX interaction allowing np-nh excitations across the N ¼ 20 shell gap.
We have measured fragment cross-sections of projectile fragmentation reactions using primary beams of 40 Ca, 48 Ca, 58 Ni, and 64 Ni at 140 MeV/nucleon on 9 Be and 181 Ta targets. The cross-sections were obtained by integrating the momentum distributions of isotopes with Z 5 measured in the A1900 fragment separator. We compare the extracted cross-sections to the predictions of the empirical parametrization of fragmentation cross-sections (EPAX).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
