Book Reviewsthe abilities of his students to make good choices, he could respect the abilities of parents to do the same, rather than limit their choices with negatively tinged hyperbole about psychotropic medication. The bias against medication is so profound, that the author describes an incident in which a student had been rushed to the emergency room the previous night with an asthma attack, and the teacher talked the parent out of having the staff administer the child's inhaler, proposing instead a psychological explanation for the asthma attack. The school also seems to let its belief in minimal structure go too far. One of the students was allowed to spend a great deal of time in the classroom of much younger children, because that is where he felt comfortable. He was found picking up a younger child by the neck and choking him. After this incident was discussed, he was still allowed to spend time in the younger children's classroom, and another similar incident happened. Sometimes, trusting a child's natural learning process puts other children in danger, and the school's responsibility is not just to the student who has to explore and make mistakes, but also to the student who is vulnerable and needs protection.
