Beef cattle are meat producers which are beneficial to humans. The purpose of this study was to identify and to control the behavior of beef cattle farmers towards biosecurity in Lamasi District - Luwu Region, South Sulawesi Province. This type of research was descriptive research. The research method was survey to participatory research and the Focus Group Discussion. Total sample was 50 respondents. Data were obtained through interview using questionnaires and observations. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistic. Likert scale 1 until 3 were used to know the response level of disagree and agree about biosecurity. The results showed that beef cattle farmers less agree to biosecurity adoption. Based on subjective norm, farmers’ behaviors agree to adopt biosecurity if they were supported by community leaders and other livestock farmers or farmer groups. Behavior control which becomes the main obstacles to implementing biosecurity are habits, prior implementation and risks. The supporting factors needed time, can be tested on a small scale cattle business, according to the needs of cattle farmers, needed workers, needed knowledge, skills, and information about biosecurity. Beef cattle farmers should be motivated to adopt biosecurity in order to get a healthy beef cattle.
The character of farmers has an important role in running a beef cattle business with a teseng system carried out between farmers and capital owners who provide cattle for and are cultivated. This study aims to determine differences in the characteristics of farmers who do with those who do not do the teseng in Patimpeng District, Bone Regency. This research was conducted with a sample of 50 people beef cattle farmers. A simple random sampling technique was done through interviews and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that the characteristics of farmers who did the teseng aged from 39 to 47 years, all were male, the most recent education was high school/equivalent, the majority of family members numbered 4 to 6 people, most had cattle 4 to 6 tails, and have been raising for 10 to 15 years.The characteristics of farmers who do not do the teseng aged 48 to 56 years old, all are male, the most recent education is high school/equivalent, the number of family members is mostly 1 to 3 people, most have cattle from 4 to 6 tails and have been raising for 10 to 15 years.
For small-scale beef cattle farmers, capital is one of the main inhibiting factors in developing their farming. Teseng is one of the local wisdom which is a solution for providing capital for small-scale farmers. This study aims to determine the effect of the socio-economic characteristics of breeders on the adoption of Teseng. The research was conducted in Mattirowalie Village, Libureng District, Bone Regency, which is one of the areas in the development of the Teseng system. The number of samples was 76 breeders consisting of 61 farmers who did not adopt Teseng and 15 breeders who adopt Teseng. The independent variable consists of perceptions of capital availability (X1), land area (X2), number of livestock (X3) and age of farmers (X4). The dependent variable is the adoption of Teseng. The regression model used was logistic regression because the dependent variable was a dichotomous variable (1 for adoption and 0 for no adoption of Teseng). The results showed that the factors that influenced the adoption of Teseng were land area (P<0.01) and the number of livestock (P<0.05). Perception, age and number of families did not have a significant effect on Teseng adoption. To increase the adoption of Teseng, the ability of breeders to provide feed both from the existing land and from the provision of alternative feed needs to be developed.
