Abstract:The study investigated attitudes towards computer and computer self-efficacy as predictors of computer anxiety among 310 preservice mathematics teachers from five higher institutions of learning in Lagos and Ogun States of Nigeria using the quantitative research method within the blueprint of the descriptive survey design. Data collected were analysed using the descriptive statistics of percentages, mean, and standard deviation and inferential statistics of factor analysis, independent samples t-test, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. Finding revealed that attitude toward computer assessed by the attitudes towards computer scale was a multi-dimensional construct (affective, perceived usefulness, behavioural intention and perceived control component). Gender differences in attitude toward computer and computer anxiety among preservice mathematics teachers were significant. Affective component, computer self-efficacy, perceived control component, and perceived usefulness component made statistically significant contributions to the variance in preservice mathematics teachers' computer anxiety. The study recommended among others that academic institutions should pay more attention to this computer anxiety and adopt proper ways of reducing the computer anxiety, so that positive e-learning experiences can be created for preservice teachers.
Mathematics, being the core subject that has its application in every other subject should be given special attention. Despite the importance of mathematics, students are not performing in the subject. Students view mathematics in abstract form. Ways of improving the teaching and learning of mathematics should be the concern of the stakeholders. A lot of research work were reported on teaching strategies, but the problem of poor performance has not been reduced to minimal level. Students thinking and error made in class can be used to create teachable moments. This study investigated whether the teachers of mathematics in Nigeria are aware, managing and using teachable moments when occur in mathematics class. The study is a descriptive research of the survey type. The sample consisted of 98 mathematics teachers randomly selected from thirty secondary schools from both Lagos and Oyo states of Nigeria. A researcher-designed of effective management of Teachable Moments which consists of 3 parts was used to collect data from the respondents. The first section of the questionnaire was used to elicit general information on teachers' demographical data. The 3 parts of the second section include awareness of teachable moment (ATM), Management of Teachable Moment with resources (MTM) and Use of Teachable Moments (UTM). All instruments were validated. The reliability coefficient of ATM, MTM and UTM using Cronbach alpha were 0.72, 0.78 and 0.69 respectively. Means and standard deviation were used to analyze the data. It was discovered that the means of the awareness and management instruments were greater than the baseline mean (2.5). Teachers are aware, can manage but are not using the moments due to time constraint. This indicated that mathematics teachers in Nigeria are aware of teachable moments, managing the moments effectively but have not been using teachable moments.
"No doubt the internet has become a globally recognized conduit for information trading and schmoozing. However, there is a rising case of internet addiction among young adults of which preservice mathematics and social studies teachers are implicated. This study investigated the correlation between preservice mathematics and social studies teachers’ internet addiction and their grade point average (GPA). Likewise, the study examined the influence of gender on internet addiction. A descriptive survey research design was implemented in the study with 300 preservice mathematics and social studies teachers and primary data collected with Internet Addiction Test (IAT, Cronbach alpha coefficient=0.92) were analysed using mean, standard deviation, independent samples t-test, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and simple linear regression analysis. The results showed that preservice mathematics and social studies teachers’ internet addiction had statistically significant negative relationship with their GPA. More so, internet addiction contributed significantly to the prediction of preservice mathematics and social studies teachers’ GPA. Gender contributed significantly to the prediction of preservice mathematics and social studies teachers’ internet addiction. In addition, there was a significant influence of gender on preservice mathematics and social studies teachers’ internet addiction with males showing higher internet addiction than their female counterparts. In line with the above findings, it was recommended that preservice mathematics and social studies teachers should lower their usage of internet and follow examples of good usage of internet technology to improve their scholastic achievement in the university. An Assessment of Google Classroom Reception and Usage among Pre-service Science, Technology and Mathematics Teachers in South-West Nigeria. Objectives: The present study assessed google classroom reception and usage among preservice Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STM) teachers in south-west Nigeria. Methods: The participants were 480 preservice STM teachers purposively selected from four universities in south-west Nigeria within the blueprint of a correlational survey research design. Data analysis was carried out using mean, standard deviation, Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis at 5% level of significance. Findings: Results showed that 94.1% of the variance in preservice STM teachers' actual use of google classroom was accounted for by a combination of attitude towards use, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and behavioural intention to use google classroom. Conclusion: Conclusively, STM teachers' educator should promote the adoption and utilization of google classroom among the preservice STM teachers to increase their reception of google classroom for instructional purposes.
Animal welfare is becoming an interesting global issue which must be given the best of attention by researchers, producers, consumers and the governments. The need to ensure the general well-being of the wild and domestic animals in every aspect of their husbandry is mandatory now in many developed countries of the world, and poultry industries are responding positively to this new dimension of husbandry. Species of animal are sensitive to the way they are being managed in terms of housing and other handlings. Meanwhile, there is little or no concern on subjects of of applied ethology in developing areas of the world such as Africa and Asia, and particular in countries like Nigeria, where livestock production and wildlife conservation is currently experiencing tremendous growth. Unlike developing countries, issue of animal welfare are being promoted by researches, sponsored information, legislation and enforcement by relevant agencies in developed nations of the world. Factors such as poor economic and technological advancements, political instabilities, social insecurities, low level of awareness and lack of information on legal provisions on animal on animal welfare have been identified to be responsible for poor animal welfare and its science in developing countries. Despite the fact that livestock sector carries the highest percentage among agricultural facets commercially in Nigeria, the level of welfare of the domestic animals and those in the wild is still below standard. This paper is however suggesting that regardless of the level of economic development in most of the low and middle-income nations, researchers can be motivated into animal welfare science, the curricula of colleges and universities be expanded to include subjects of applied ethology, professional bodies and associations on animal welfare can be formed with international affiliations. All these may change the orientation of the people and governments in developing countries positively towards animal welfare.
