New liberal arts attempting to innovate traditional liberal arts is formed in latest technological revolution and the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Based on the theory of Yuri Lotman's Cultural Semiotics, this paper explores the interpretant and cultural symbol of new liberal arts using the methods of literature, semiotics, and qualitative comparison. It is found that the interpretant of new liberal arts includes disciplines integration with various integrated modes, cultivating "T-shaped" innovative talents, building new platform and institutional innovation in China, and the culture symbols of new liberal arts are Chinese macro-culture symbol and micro-teaching culture symbol. This paper hopes to promote new liberal arts development in China and improve teachers' conscious ability of culture in new liberal arts. In addition, it is the requirement of college students' development in new liberal arts. Facing the future, constructing new liberal arts is a new trend. This paper provides references for semioticians, teachers and administrators in new liberal arts.
The Analects of Confucius is one of the representative works of traditional Chinese culture and has been translated into different versions. Tsai Chih-Chung's English comic version is one of the most popular among the different translated versions. It has a considerable potential to spread Chinese culture by multimodal means. A brief review shows that so far, there have been few studies on Tsai Chih-Chung's Chinese classic comics from the perspective of multimodality. This study applies the analytical framework based on Kress and van Leeuwen's "Visual Grammar" to Tsai Chih-Chung's English comic version of The Analects of Confucius, attempting to explore how the visual modes realize three meta-meanings in the English comic version. Through the analysis, it is found that the images in Tsai Chih-Chung's English comic version fully realize the representational meaning, interactive meaning and compositional meaning. Furthermore, most of the images in Tsai Chih-Chung's English comic version realize more than just one meta-meaning, and more frequently include all three meta-meanings. By combining the texts and images organically, Tsai Chih-Chung's English comic version has been successful in attracting readers to read the classic, deepening the readers' understanding of the classic and finally making them accept the cultural essence embedded in it. This study provides a case reference for the analysis of multimodal discourse in Chinese classic comics, and also contributes to optimizing Chinese classic comics' design and innovation.
Semioticians’ efforts on lie study, mostly focus on lie and sign relationship, its general characteristics on the basis of a static analysis. Sun Tzu's The Art of War, the existing oldest treatise with the theme on lie whose influence extends beyond battle to other competitive spheres such as politics and business by modern readers cannot be overlooked. Sun Tzu, in contrast to semiotic studies of lying, focuses on the dynamic process of lie-sign signification, stating that lie formation is preconditioned by sign observation from the sender, the recipient, and the surrounding environment. He proposes his Xing (形) theory that the manipulation of recipient through the use of signs is the key to subdue him; he presents the formulating process of a lie-sign from the standpoint of a deceiver, which is uncommon in western culture. This study can shed new light on both the classic and the process of L-sign formulation and signification.
