Decision making skill is deemed to be a key feature of the nurse's role in today's health care organizations. Thus, educators should use innovative teaching strategies that grow students' competence in problem-solving and decision making skills like problem-based learning (PBL). The aim of this study is to determine the effect of problem-based learning on nursing students' decision making skills and styles. A quasi-experimental research design was utilized. The sample consisted of 84 students from the fourth year in the Faculty of Nursing, Minia University. Two tools were used: Nursing Students' Decision Making Skills Scale and Nursing Students' Decision Making Style. This study revealed that the mean scores of decision making skills in the study group students increased before and after applying PBL (before: 71 + 8.5, after: 116.3 + 10.4) with a statistical significant difference (p = .001). There was no statistical significant differences between the study and control groups (p = 1.000) before intervention. The most dominant decision-making style among the study and control groups in relation to before and after applying PBL was a behavioral decision style with no statistical significant differences. This study concluded that using PBL has a curial role in developing and improving nursing students' decision making skills; however, it has no effect on decision-making style.
Background: the quality of relationship between supervisors and subordinates and leadership of head nurses played an important role in their subordinates such as organizational commitment, job performance and promotions. Aim: the aim of this study was to determine relation between leadership styles and behaviors of nurse managers' and organizational commitment of staff nurses. Design: Descriptive correlational research design was used to achieve the aim of the current study. Setting: the study was conducted in Health Insurance Hospital, Minia governorate at Minia city. Subjects: the subject of study was included all nurse managers (head nurses) and staff nurses in Health Insurance Hospital (n=255), divided as (17 nurse managers + 238 staff nurses). Tools: three tools were used to collect data pertinent to the study as: Leadership Styles Questionnaire (Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire 5X), Leadership Behavior, and the Organizational Commitment of the Staff Nurses Questionnaire. Results: The study revealed that highest percentage of head nurses had high level for transformational (63%) and transactional style (59.7%); also, more than half (58.8%) of head nurses had high level of leadership behaviors and more than one third (39.9%) had moderate level. Moreover, it was noted that more than half (57.1%) had high level commitment, and more than one third (41.2%) had moderate level. Conclusion: there were positive correlations between leadership style as well as leadership behaviors with the organizational commitment. Recommendations: Periodic training courses should be provided in order to keep head nurses updating knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding to leadership skill, behaviors and styles.
Background: Nurses spend several hours a day in work environment; thus, quality of work life and organizational commitment are two important components for the staff, and dissatisfaction of these issues affects their other roles at home and community. The Work Life balance must be maintained effectively to ensure that all employees are working at their peak potential and free from stress. Aim: To assess the relation between quality of Nursing work life and organizational commitment. Research design: A descriptive correlational research design. Subjects: A representative sample 30% of total staff nurses (N= 193). Setting: Chest Diseases Hospital, at Kuwait. Tools of data collection: included two tools; first tool Brook's Quality of Nursing Work Life Survey; second the Organizational Commitment of the Staff Nurses Questionnaire. Results: More than half of staff nurses (57.0%) had the moderate level to the total quality of work life. Most staff nurses (86.5%) had a moderate level of total organizational commitment. There were positive fair association between total organizational commitment of the staff nurses and their work life, work design, work context, work world, and total quality of nursing work life. Also, there were positive association between total quality of nursing work life of staff nurses and their affective, continuance and normative commitment. Conclusion:The findings of this study revealed that quality of nursing work life and organizational commitment were positively correlated. Recommendation: Increase nurses' satisfaction through competitive salaries, encourage the teamwork spirit and conduct periodical meetings to discuss their problems.
Background: Today's nursing students and future nurses make up the backbone of the health care forces in every country, whose attitudes are influential on other health care providers. Aim of this study: was to investigate the relationship between the attitude toward nursing profession, achievement motivation and academic performance of baccalaureate nursing students. Methodology: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized in the study. Setting: The study was conducted at Faculty of nursing, Minia University. A stratified random sampling procedures were employed for selection of 50% from the students in each of the four academic years enrolled in Faculty of Nursing, Minia University during the academic year 2012\2013 with total number (n=385). Tools of the study: 1 st tool was attitude toward nursing profession scale to assess students' attitude toward nursing profession. 2 nd tool was achievement motivation scale prepared by Khalefa (2006). 3 rd tool was an auditing checklist for students' academic performance at the end of the academic year. Results: indicated that the majority of the subjects had positive attitude toward the nursing profession and more than two thirds of them had high achievement motivation. There was statistically significant positive correlation between students' attitude toward nursing profession and their achievement motivation. However, there was no statistically significant correlation between students' attitude toward nursing profession or achievement motivation and their academic performance. Conclusions: Nursing students' attitude tended to be positive towards their future profession. First year students appeared to have more positive attitude and higher level of achievement motivation than other academic years. Recommendations: Nursing educators should strengthen curriculum reform, enhance their own quality as teachers, try new teaching strategies and allow students to experience appropriate clinical environment. Nursing social status in Media needs to be improved.
Background: Head nurses are the important portion in nursing administration. The responsibilities of head nurses are to manage the nurses properly and provide the best quality of care to the patients. Thus, the provision of the supportive leadership can retain the employees in the long run and better health care services can be ensured. Aim of the Study: The aim of the current study was to determine The effect of head nurse's leadership style on their nurses' turnover intention at the Minia General Hospital. Research Question: Is the head nurse's leadership style affecting their nurses' turnover intention? Research Design: A descriptive correlational research design was utilized to achieve the aim of the current study. Setting: The study was conducted at Minia General Hospital. Sample: The subjects of the study consisted of ( 232) staff nurses working in Minia General Hospital. Tools of data collection: included two tools; first tool: the leadership style questionnaire; second tool: turnover intention questionnaire. Results: there was a positive correlation between autocratic style and turnover intention. Furthermore, about the third quarter of staff nurses had an intention to leave the hospital. Conclusion: the result indicated that the dominantly style by head nurses was an autocratic leadership style that lead to a high desire of staff nurse turnover intention.
