The Community Service Program is aimed at increasing the interest and speech ability of PKK women in Medan Polonia District and at the same time increasing reading interest, the ability to think logically and reasoning, the courage to express opinions, and to increase the creativity of PKK women in Medan Polonia District. The results of this training are: (1) Improving the ability of PKK mothers in giving public speeches. (2) Helps foster interest in reading PKK mothers for speech material. (3) Providing intensive speech training for PKK mothers. (4) Providing pocket books that can help PKK mothers understand good and correct speech methods and techniques. The results of this training have increased the insight of PKK mothers to give speeches properly and correctly in public and foster interest in reading because to search for speech topics requires insight into speech themes.
Local wisdom in traditional game, kasti (a ballgame played between two teams of 12 players each) as cultural values integrates character building. The research used qualitative method. Descriptive qualitative data consisted of primary and secondary data. Primary data were gathered by observing, recording, documenting, and analyzing the data from the presentation of the traditional game. Secondary data were the information obtained from various sources such as books, documents, photographs, theses, dissertation, internet, research report, articles, and the other writings which contained knowledge, dealing with the subject matter of the research. The result of the research showed that the values of character building which dominantly establish traditional game, kasti were a) creativity, b) religiosity, c) curiosity, d) discipline, e) democracy, f) hard working, g) tolerance, h) responsibility, i) achievement, and j) appreciation.
This research was field research taken from the Daily News Sinar Indonesia Baru, Medan. The problems to be discussed were association, ambiguity, and lexical meaning. The purpose of this study was to explore or find out the meanings contained in the Daily News headlines in the Sinar Indonesia Baru Medan. To analyze the meaning of the Daily News headlines of the Sinar Indonesia Baru, a structural-semantic theory was used which referred to Abdul Chaer's view. The method used in data collection was the listening method by listening to the collection of existing materials on the daily news headlines of the Medan Sinar Indonesia Baru, then proceeding with the note-taking technique.After that, they were grouped based on the uses of association, ambiguity, and lexical meanings found in the headlines. The equivalent method was a method whose determination tool was outside and did not become part of the language in question (Sudariyanto, 1993:13). In this case, the basic technique used was the determining element sorting technique. As a continuation, a qualitative description method was used. This means that this qualitative method as a whole makes use of interpretive ways of presenting in the form of a description.
This study depicts how petatah-petitih (proverbs) and their meanings are used by the Minangkabau people in Medan, Indonesia. This study utilized a qualitative approach. The method used in data collection is documentation techniques to informants talk about sayings and their meanings in Minangkabau society. The data were in the form of utterances taken from observation and interview. The findings present the meanings of petatah-petitih used by community members on some occasion such as giving advice, thanksgiving, marriage, courtesy, and arranging marriage contracts. The moral values incorporated in the proverbs include tolerance, loyalty, humility, satire, and success. Proverbs used for family advice are the most dominant.
