AbstractA better understanding of factors influencing eHealth adoption is required given the strong policy attention to eHealth but a low level of actual adoption in many European countries. A model for organisational eHealth adoption is proposed in the study, derived from several adoption frameworks. The empirical part is based on a survey among hospitals in the Netherlands and includes a Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach. Specific attention is paid to measurement of organisational readiness and to adoption as a process including different stages. Our results suggest a sharp decrease in the adoption process after the stage of interest/commitment and significant influence of size of the hospital, organisational readiness including technical aspects, and support by top management of the hospital. The paper concludes with some organisational strategies and policies to foster eHealth adoption and suggestions for future study.
