Recently, massive open online courses (MOOCs) have been offering a new online approach in the field of distance learning and online education. A typical MOOC course consists of video lectures, reading material and easily accessible tests for students. For a computer programming course, it is important to provide interactive, dynamic, online coding exercises and more complex programming assignments for learners. It is expedient for the students to receive prompt feedback on their coding submissions. Although MOOC automated programme evaluation subsystem is capable of assessing source programme files that are in learning management systems, in MOOC systems there is a grader that is responsible for evaluating students' assignments with the result that course staff would be required to assess thousands of programmes submitted by the participants of the course without the benefit of an automatic grader. This paper presents a new concept for grading programming submissions of students and improved techniques based on the Java unit testing framework that enables automatic grading of code chunks. Some examples are also given such as the creation of unique exercises by dynamically generating the parameters of the assignment in a MOOC programming course combined with the kind of coding style recognition to teach coding standards.
In distributed computing, network sockets provide mechanism for a process to establish a remote connection to another process and send messages back and forth. This interface makes possible a proper mechanism that allows a program running as a process on computer A to call a procedure or a function on remote computer B and pass parameters to it. In the case of synchronous Remote Procedure Call (RPC), processes on computer A need to wait for the finishing of execution of procedures on computer B. When the called procedure finishes, produces its result and passes it to the process on computer A that can continue execution. The question is what happens between the time of the remote procedure call and arrival of the returned values and how much the caller must wait for result. Prompted by the release of Protocol Buffers and gRPC by Google, this paper answers that question, describing the structure of third generation RPCs and analysing them putting the focus on performance and the way of marshalling parameters. To facilitate the choice between them this paper represents the results of performance tests carried out by the authors. Nowadays if a student in Hungary (age between 17-20 years old) wants to be the member of the Hungarian selected team (has four members) to participate in the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI), first, he has to qualify himself in the first fifteen of the National Secondary School Competition (OKTV) in the programming category after the III. round. Then he should be in the first four place after the sixth round of the Selection Competition. Being successful is necessary that the student wants to start studying computer programming at least in the 9 th school year and he needs a teacher who prepares him. In the last nine years three students of the author have participated in five Olympics and two of them won gold and bronze medals. This article wants to demonstrate the methods that a teacher needs to use to teach students in 9 th school year for computer programming, to be the member of the Hungarian National Team after three or four years.
