A Contingent Resource. The Conditions of Gender Conversion into a Political Resource
Delphine Dulong, Sandrine Lévêque
The aim of this article is to examine if and how gender can be converted into political resource. With the case of the « Gauche plurielle » campaign in the 5th district of Paris during the 2001 municipal election, the study shows that gender incorporated dispositions can legitimately be displayed in political activities only if these dispositions correspond well to the conditions of action : if gender cannot be converted into a legitimate political resource during the internai competition for a high-ranking place on the electoral list, the global conditions of the competition allow the leader to emphasize her gender in the process of electoral mobilization.
