Background and Objectives: To evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in parents of children with cochlear implants and assess influencing factors. These data can enable practitioners to support patients and their families in utilizing the cochlear implant and its benefits to the fullest extent. Subjects and Methods: A retrospective descriptive and analytic study was conducted at the Implantation center Mohammed VI. Parents of cochlear implant patients were asked to fill out forms and answer a questionnaire. Participants included parents of children <15 years old who underwent unilateral cochlear implantation between January 2009 and December 2019, presenting with bilateral severe to profound neurosensory deafness. Participants completed the children with co chlear implantation: parent's perspective (CCIPP) HRQoL questionnaire. Results: The mean age of the children was 6.49 ± 2.55 years. The mean time between implantation for each patient and this study was calculated as 4.33±2.05 years. There was a positive correlation between this variable and the following subscales: communication, well-being and happiness, and the process of implantation. For these subscales, the score was higher as the delay was greater. Parents of children who received speech therapy before implantation were more satisfied on the following subscales: communication, general functioning, well-being and happiness, implantation process, implantation effectiveness, and support for the child. Conclusions: The HRQoL is better in families of children who received their implant at an early age. This finding raises awareness of the importance of systemic screening in newborns.
Bell’s palsy is defined by an acute peripheral facial palsy of unknown cause. It was rarely reported in clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccines. We report the case of a healthy 26-years-old male patient who presented an acute onset of a left Bell’s palsy 6 days after the administration of the first dose of COVID-19 BNT16b2 mRNA vaccine. The clinical examination found grade III left facial palsy with no other signs, with normal audiometry, impedancemetry, and Schirmer test. The patient was treated with corticosteroids and ocular protection. After a follow-up of 3 weeks, there was a regression of the facial palsy after the treatment. Bell’s palsy following the administration of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine is a rare adverse event described in the literature. Two similar cases to ours were described and adopted the same conduct with did with good results. Studies showed that there was a significantly higher incidence of Bell’s palsy following the administration of the vaccine compared to the general population. A better knowledge of these adverse events (AEs) will help monitor patients with this presentation. More studies could be needed to have an assessment of the incidence of these AEs and confirm the findings of certain studies.
Epistaxis is very frequented emergency faced by ENT practician around the world, commonly benign but can lead to dangerous morbidities if refractory. Surgical is the standard treatment and embolization and endoscopic ligation are the emergent routes of treatment constituting the main arsenal to face refractory epistaxis with similar success rate. We thus report a low energy-traumatic bilateral refractory posterior epistaxis treated with arterial embolization with no rebleeding up to 6-monthmarque follow-up.
Introduction: Thrombosis of the internal carotid following a non-penetrating blunt trauma is rare and unusual, implicating mostly intimal and medial vessel wall damage. With the lack of proper clinical presentation, it’s often diagnosed by arteriography while searching for expansive cerebral hemorrhagic complications. Case report: Hence, the report of this rare case of a post blunt trauma thrombosis of the intra-petrous and cavernous segment of the internal carotid in a 26-years-old male patient was revealed 1 year later by otological symptoms. CT scan, MRI, and angiography confirmed the diagnosis. Conclusion: Management of this serious injury is controversial, to say the least among authors involving both medical and surgical treatment.
