WitwatersrandDespite acknowledgment of the underrepresentation of fathers in research, the perspective of fathers remains somewhat spectral. For fathers of young infants, sometimes referred to as the forgotten parents, the maternal perspective tends to dominate. This article reflects on a research process inviting South African fathers of young infants to participate in psychoanalytically informed interview-based research and to reflect on their experiences of becoming and being a father. The struggle to recruit fathers is explored. Fathers' experiences of participating in the research are then discussed in relation to their appreciation of a space to open up, their experience of thinking about themselves from the perspective of the other, and their unexpected discoveries during the interview process. We suggest that fatherhood can be studied not only through what fathers say in interviews, but also through how they approach and, subsequently, integrate the interview encounter. Reflection on their engagement with this space contributes toward understanding the process of representing themselves as fathers in their own minds.
