Background: Cysticercosis in humans is infection with the larval form (cysticercus cellulosae) of the pork tapeworm T. solium. Encystment of larvae can occur in almost any tissue. The location of cysts in order of frequency is the central nervous system, subcutaneous tissue and striated muscle, vitreous humour of the eye and, rarely, other tissues. High resolution ultrasound can be used in the diagnosis of muscular and soft tissue cysticercosis. Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the ultrasonographic fi ndings in cases of muscular and soft tissue cysticercosis. Materials and methods: It was a retrospective review of the cases of muscular and soft tissue cysticercosis which were diagnosed by ultrasound during June 2007 to May 2009 in the department of Radiology and Imaging, Nepalgunj Medical College Teaching Hospital. A total of six patients were evaluated. Result: There were four males and two females. Age of the patient ranged from 18 to 50 years. All of the patients presented with a swelling with pain in fi ve of them. There was a wide variation in the location of the cysts. In all cases ultrasound revealed a cystic lesion with an echogenic eccentric pedunculated nodule attached to the wall. The mean diameter of the cyst was 6mm. Smooth wall was present in fi ve cases whereas one of the cysts revealed irregular wall. Pericystic infl ammatory changes were seen in the adjacent muscles. Conclusion: Ultrasound is a safe and non-invasive method that can be used in the diagnosis of muscular and soft tissue cysticercosis.
Introduction: Acne vulgaris is a common and chronic inflammatory skin disease of pilosebaceous unit. Obesity is one of the biggest problems in western life style but nowadays, the problem is increasing even in low and middle-income countries. Body Mass Index (BMI) is used to accurately measure obesity.Objective: To find out the association between different categories of BMI and severity of acne.Materials and methods: This was a cross sectional prospective study conducted in the outpatient department of Gandaki Medical College from January to July, 2017. All the newly diagnosed patients with acne were included in the study. Height and weight of the patients was recorded and BMI was calculated. BMI was categorized as underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese. Type of lesions were noted and severity of acne was graded from 1 to 4.Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 17.0 for windows. One-way Analysis of Variance between groups (ANOVA) test was applied. P value of less than 0.05 was considered significant.Results: There were altogether 249 patients with acne. Age of the patients ranged from 10 to 44 years with mean age of 20.82 ±5.9 years. Most of the patients were in the age group of 11-20 years. Female: male ratio was 1:1.4. Majority of patients (65.5%) had normal BMI. Most of the patients had Grade 2 acne (52.6%). There was no significant association between the BMI and severity of acne (p=0.129).Conclusion: There was no significant association between BMI and severity of acne.

Introduction: Melasma is an acquired hyper melanosis that becomes more pronounced after sun exposure. Centro facial which is the commonest pattern followed by Malar and Mandibular are three clinical patterns of Melasma. Genetic influences, exposure to UV radiation, pregnancy, hormonal therapies, contribute to the pathogenesis of melasma. Melasma may considerably have significant effect on quality of life of patients. Objectives: The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of melasma in quality of life (QoL) in the form of DLQI (Dermatology Life Quality Index) and severity of melasma according to Melasma Area and Severity Index (MASI). Materials and Methods: This is a hospital based cross-sectional prospective study conducted in 193 Melasma patients in the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, Gandaki Medical College and Teaching Hospital, Pokhara from November 2018 to November 2019. MASI score was calculated and the patients were provided with a Nepali version of DLQI to fill up. Results: This study included 193 patients. Mean age of patients with melasma was 29.4 ± 8.5 years with maximum reported age of 59 years. The Mean age of onset of disease was 26.5 years. The Mean age of onset of disease had little impact on DLQI. The mean DLQI score was 10.9 ± 5.9, thus indicating “very large effect on patient’s life”. The mean MASI score was 6.6 ± 5.2. It was found that there was no correlation between severity of disease and DLQI scores (p=0.317) Conclusion: Melasma commonly affected females during second and third decades of life. It had a very large effect on patient’s life as assessed by DLQI.
Background: Cutaneous adverse drug reactions (CADRs) range from minor reactions to several life threatening complications. Objectives: To study the clinical spectrum of cutaneous adverse drug reactions, determine the causative drugs responsible for the reactions and to assess the preventability.Methods: The study was carried out in the Department of Dermatology of Gandaki Medical College Teaching Hospital from June 2011 to June 2015. All the patients attending the Dermatology Outpatient Department and the patients admitted in the wards with suspected cutaneous adverse drug reactions to systemic drugs were included in the study. A detailed clinical history, including the history of drug intake was noted. Each case was assessed for its causality by using the WHO definitions. Data analysis was done using SPSS software.Results: There were 102 patients in total. The mean age of the patient was 32 ±15.7 years. Maximum patients belonged to the 21 to 30 years age group. There were 59 female patients and 43 male patients. Severe type of cutaneous adverse drug reactions was noted in 7.8% of patients. Antibiotics were responsible for most of the cutaneous adverse drug reactions. Cefixime was the most commonly incriminated drug. Exanthematous drug reaction was the most common type seen in 45%. Stevens-Johnson syndrome was the commonest type noted among the serious adverse drug reactions. Drug preventability was noted in 6% of patients.Conclusions: The commonest type of CADR noted was exanthematous type. Antibiotics were the commonest drug group involved in CADR.
