Light at wavelengths in the near-infrared (NIR) region allows for deep penetration and minimal absorption through high scattering tissue media. NIR light has been conventionally used through the first NIR optical tissue window with wavelengths from 650 to 950 nm. Longer NIR wavelengths had been overlooked due to major water absorption peaks and a lack of NIR-CCD detectors. The second NIR spectral window from 1100 to 1350 nm and a new spectral window from 1600 to 1870 nm, known as the third NIR optical window, were investigated. Optical attenuation measurements from thin tissue slices of normal and malignant breast and prostate tissues, pig brain, and chicken tissue were obtained in the spectral range from 400 to 2500 nm. Optical images of chicken tissue overlying three black wires were also obtained using the second and third spectral windows. Due to a reduction in scattering and minimal absorption, longer attenuation lengths and clearer optical images could be seen in the second and third NIR optical windows compared to the conventional first NIR optical window. A possible fourth optical window centered at 2200 nm was noted.
Spatially coherent multicolored optical vector vortex beams were created using a tunable liquid crystal q-plate and a supercontinuum light source. The feasibility of the q-plate as a tunable spectral filter (switch) was demonstrated, and the polarization topology of the resulting vector vortex beam was mapped. Potential applications include multiplexing for broadband high-speed optical communication, ultradense data networking, and super-resolution microscopy.
a Chlorin-e6 (chl-e6) and a hydrogenated derivative (chl-e6H) were semi-synthesized, and their photophysical properties and photodynamic activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans evaluated. Methyl pheophorbide-a (Mepheo-a) was obtained from S. maxima using methanolic extraction with acid catalysis (CH 3 OH-H 2 SO 4 ). Chlorin-e6 was prepared from Mepheo-a by basic hydrolysis with H 2 O-acetone and NaOH. Hydrogenated Chlorin-e6 was synthesized by a similar procedure starting from the hydrogenated methyl pheophorbide-a (Mepheo-aH). Photophysical studies were performed in order to determine the singlet oxygen quantum yield of chl-e6H which is higher than that of chl-e6. The microorganism inactivation of chl-e6 and chl-e6H was investigated at two concentrations and three fluence levels. Both chl-e6 and chl-e6H showed microorganism inactivation against Gram-positive bacteria and a fungus.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
