This study found that neuroticism was the strongest associated factor of psychological health of medical students during their most stressful testing period. Various personality traits, emotional intelligence and previous academic performance were associated factors of psychological health during a less stressful period. These data suggest that early identification of medical students who are vulnerable to the stressful environment of medical schools might help them maintain psychological well-being during medical training.
Globalisation and transition from a production-based to a knowledge-based economy have a profound impact on the role and value of higher education in Malaysia. The restructuring and transformation of higher education in Malaysia, particularly in the research universities, focus on critical areas such as research and innovation, teaching and learning, and industry and community engagement, are likely to affect these institutions as a whole and in particular both staff and students. The purpose of this study is to profile the mental health and wellbeing of undergraduate students of the designated research university as the university underwent institutional transformation. The findings from Phase I and Phase II of the study over the course of 2 years and using the New Mind Maps instrument suggest that undergraduate students who were exposed to the changing environment resulting from the university's transformation were experiencing a psychologically stressful and anxiety-provoking time. Implications from the findings are discussed.
Transition services are required by law for students with disabilities in many developed countries. In Malaysia, however, there is still no specific legislation mandating that school‐to‐work transition planning and services be provided to students with disabilities. This study investigated the state of the transition services provided by educational organisations to students with disabilities in Malaysia. A mixed method research design, which utilises both quantitative and qualitative research techniques, was employed to obtain information from 23 government organisations and NGOs involved in the education and training of students with disabilities. This study found that the organisations surveyed were aware of the lack of transition support and call attention to the importance of instituting a national policy on school‐to‐work transition services and supported employment systems for students with disabilities. The legislative and educational implications for Malaysia are discussed.
