Academic medical centers are the perfect platforms to provide continuing medical education focused on interprofessional education and collaborative practice. While educating practitioners on interprofessional education and collaboration, faculty members are also promoting the continuing competence of healthcare providers. In 2003, the Institute of Medicine advocated for professional competence to include patient-centered care, communication and interdisciplinary teams. 1 These are foundational concepts of interprofessional collaboration. Similar to preparing students for certification or licensure board exams, which assess entry-level competence, trained academic faculty can facilitate the ongoing continuing competence of healthcare providers through the use of interprofessional education.
