The burgeoning use of numeric data resources across all academic disciplines raises significant questions about the library's role in providing data services and promoting quantitative literacy. This study analyzes the content of web pages to determine the presence and promotion of data resources and services at a random sample of large research libraries (and their related institutions) in North America. The results prompt the authors to challenge libraries to more fully engage their users in efforts at richer discovery, use, and analysis of data.
The undergraduate research experience (URE) provides an opportunity for students to engage in meaningful work with faculty mentors on research projects. An increasingly important component of scholarly research is the application of research data management best practices, yet this often falls out of the scope of URE programs. This article presents a case study of faculty and librarian collaboration in the integration of a library and research data management curriculum into a social work URE research team. Discussion includes reflections on the content and learning outcomes, benefits of a holistic approach to introducing undergraduate students to research practice, and challenges of scale.
An important class of questions for knowledge based systems concern comparisons, such as "How is X like Y?" and "How are X and Y different?" This paper describes how we have used a cognitive simulation of analogical processing to answer such questions, to support domain experts in entering new knowledge. We outline techniques for case construction and summarization of comparison results that have been developed and refined based on an independent formative evaluation. In addition to these techniques, we discuss the role of the comparison system in SHAKEN, the larger system in which they are embedded, and our plans for further improvements.
Purpose
– The purpose of this paper is to illustrate that Electronic Theses and Dissertation (ETD) metadata can be used as data for institutional assessment and to map an extended research landscape when connected to other data sets through linked data models.
Design/methodology/approach
– This paper presents conceptual consideration of ideas behind linked data architecture to leverage ETD and attendant metadata to build a case for institutional assessment. Analysis of graph data support the considerations.
Findings
– The study reveals first and foremost that ETD metadata is in itself data. Concerns with creating URIs for data elements and general applicability of linked data model formation result. The analysis positively points up a rich environment of institutional relationships not readily found in traditional flat metadata records.
Originality/value
– This paper provides a new perspective in examining research landscape through ETDs produced by graduate students in higher education sector.
