Performance-based parametric design method for improving the face milling cutter design efficiency and ensuring the use of performance has an important significance. Three kinds of parameter design method are described in this paper, and parametric design of series of layer milling cutter is completed by modeling parametric design method with UG software. Also, modal analysis is made with FEM. Therefore the study results provide examples for optimization of tool structural and analysis of restrain vibration.
UG template model-based parametric design method plays an important role in improving face milling cutter design efficiency and ensuring design accuracy. Three kinds of parameter design method are described in this paper. Parametric design of series for face milling cutters is completed with UG software and UG template model, moreover, user menu and an interactive window are customized, which improves design efficiency and accuracy of face milling cutter. Meanwhile, this study can provide reference for more model design and functional development.
The generation procedure of saw tooth chip when PCBN tools orthogonal cutting hard steel GCr15 is emulated by FEM software ABAQUS in this study. The model effectively overcomes serious element distortions and cell singularity in high strain domain caused by large material deformation. The effects of cutting edge preparation on cutting force, cutting temperature and residual stress are analyzed. Results of FEM show that cutting edge preparation has a great impact on cutting procedure. Under the same cutting condition, cutting force, temperature and residual stress of sharp edge, honed edge and chamfered edge increases in turn, and three kinds of cutting edge have the same change rule in residual stress. Chamfered edge has a good temperature distributing, and it is the best edge preparation in hard cutting.
UG Open/Grip and Open/API hybrid programming approach allows accurate modeling of copy milling cutters, avoiding modeling in the software caused by inefficient and poor accuracy flaws. This paper uses all parameters design of UG-based hybrid programming, forming a series of three-dimensional entity of copy milling cutters rapidly by modifying the basic parameters of the copy milling cutters, which can greatly improve the design efficiency of a series copy milling cutters.
