ABSTRACTIn this present study, samples of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel were nitrided at a 5 Torr pressure, and temperature at 400°C, 4 hours duration period and atmospheres at 80%N 2 :20% H 2 , 25%N 2 :75%H 2 and 10%N 2 :90%H 2 . In order to study the influence of the atmosphere on the structure and properties of the nitrided layer, the samples were characterized by optical microscopy, x-ray diffraction and microhardness test. In all samples there was precipitation of chromium nitrides. This precipitation occurs because the actual temperature on the bombed surface is greater than the average temperature. Furthermore, in the sample nitrided in atmosphere at 10%N 2 :90%H 2 the metastable phase austenite expanded is not present. Whereas the appearance of this phase occurs in samples treated with higher concentration of N 2, and its presence is more intensified according to the increase of %N 2 , so that, making the treatment condition with an atmosphere at 80% N 2 :20% H 2 more favorable.
