Presence and significance of fivefold configurations in liquid metals are investigated by combining x-ray absorption spectroscopy and computer simulations (molecular dynamics and reverse Monte Carlo) in liquid and undercooled liquid nickel. We show that icosahedral short-range ordering (ISRO), probed by common-neighbor (CNA) and spherical invariant (W6 ) analysis, involves a limited fraction (14–18% in undercooled nickel for different structural models) of local atomic configurations. The emerging picture for the liquid structure is that of a mixture of nearly icosahedral structures embedded in a disordered network mainly composed of fragments of highly distorted icosahedra (40–45% of the total), structures reminiscent of the crystalline phase, and other
configurations
The one-dimensional motion of a massless Brownian particle on a symmetric periodic substrate can be rectified by reinjecting its driving noise through a realistic recycling procedure. If the recycled noise is multiplicatively coupled to the substrate, the ensuing feedback system works like a passive Maxwell's daemon, capable of inducing a net current that depends on both the delay and the autocorrelation times of the noise signals. Extensive numerical simulations show that the underlying rectification mechanism is a resonant nonlinear effect: The observed currents can be optimized for an appropriate choice of the recycling parameters with immediate application to the design of nanodevices for particle transport.
The long-term objective of the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA) fusion materials programme is to develop structural and armor materials in combination with the necessary production and fabrication technologies for reactor concepts beyond the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. The programmatic roadmap is structured into four engineering research lines which comprise fabrication process development, structural material development, armor material optimization, and irradiation performance testing, which are complemented by a fundamental research programme on ''Materials Science and Modelling.'' This paper presents the current research status of the EFDA experimental and testing investigations, and gives a detailed overview of the latest results on materials research, fabrication, joining, high heat flux testing, plasticity studies, modelling, and validation experiments.Corresponding author.
