The quality and safety of nursing care are associated with care process and the human resources management. This research aimed to characterize in patients at a orthopedic ward of a school hospital, according to their dependence level on nursing care and nurses' team dimensioning. This was a cross-sectional, descriptive study which data were obtained through nursing records. The calculus for nursing dimensioning was performed and subsequently compared with the current staff of the hospital section. The results showed that 51.1% of patients need semi-intensive care, 42.6% intermediate care, and 6.3% minimum care. The nurses' staff is considered lower than that recommended for the unit. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the number of nurses to care in patients in that institution, in accordance to the level of dependence observed.Descriptors: Nursing Care; Quality of Health Care; Human Resources. RESUMENLa calidad y la seguridad del cuidado de enfermería están asociadas a los procesos de atención y dimensionamiento de recursos humanos. Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo de caracterizar los pacientes de una sala de ortopedia de uno hospital escuela, de acuerdo con su nivel de dependencia de los cuidados de enfermería y el dimensionamiento de los enfermeros del equipo. Estudio transversal y descriptivo cuyos datos fueron recogidos de los registros de enfermería. El dimensionamiento del equipo de enfermería fue calculado y posteriormente comparado con el personal actual de la sección del hospital. Los resultados indicaron que 51,1% de los pacientes necesitan cuidados semi-intensivos, 42,6% cuidados intermedios y 6,3% cuidados mínimos. indicaron cuidados semi-intensivos; 257 fichas (42,6%), cuidados intermedios y 38 fichas (6,3%), cuidados mínimos. El personal del equipo de enfermería es considerada inferior a la recomendada para la unidad. Pero es necesario aumentar el número de enfermeros para el cuidado de los pacientes en esa institución, de acuerdo con el nivel de dependencia observados.Descriptores:
