PurposeWorkarounds are defined as user-formulated solutions that overcome the obstacles preventing the system's execution from the users' lenses. In this paper, the authors aim to analyze the workarounds in system implementations and post-implementations with reflections on different levels of resilience in the workplace.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, the authors conduct a critical review of enterprise resource planning (ERP) system workarounds by evaluating whether the workarounds are treated as resilience enhancers or as hinderers at multiple levels. While doing this evaluation, the authors try to understand the nature of the workarounds (self-serving, social-serving) with respective levels of analysis for resilience (ERP resilience, organizational resilience, team resilience, employee resilience) and to integrate the assessment of similar concepts to resilience such as adaptability, flexibility and agility (in survival and sustainability dimensions).FindingsWorkaround solutions can be treated as resilience enhancers when the alternative solutions overcome some systemic problems and prevent system failures in the short run, but in the long term, they should motivate positive change and organizational dynamics. Otherwise, weaknesses of informal workarounds may become embedded in practice, and prevent confronting and correcting the shortcomings of the system and thus harm resilience.Originality/valueThe differentiation of workarounds as self-serving or social-serving and the resilience perspective toward workarounds with different levels of analysis and integrating resilience relevant concepts such as adaptability, agility and flexibility are new as far as the authors know.
The production capacity and employment in the meat processing industry in Turkey has increased in parallel with the demand of the growing population. The meat processing industry turns animal raw materials into ready-to-eat products with a long shelf life such as sausages, garlic-flavored fermented sausages, salami, bacon, roasted meat, and ham. It is clear that the meat processing industry is entirely dependent on animal husbandry. However, due to animal production rate exceeds the rate of meat consumption in Turkey, both government agencies and organizations, as well as meat processing companies, are forced to manage the demand for meat and to improve their production lines. In this study, in order to meet the increasing demand of customers in a meat processing company operating in Istanbul, 4 different scenarios were developed with the idea of how to create more final products in the same working time. The scenarios were examined using the simulation model and the utilization rates of machines have been evaluated. In addition, the effects of the scenarios on the final product amount were discussed. Thus, the findings of the study assisted the decision-makers in the company for the selection of the right approach.
ABSTRACTModularity is an approach in which a complex system is transformed into loosely coupled subsystems and standard interfaces. The modularity principle has been applied in many different areas. In this study aims to measure service quality within modular technological structures included in health services. The modular structure consisting of the public hospital, cancer screening center, e-nabız and primary healthcare and satisfaction of the customers receiving service from family medicine centers in Bolu province is analyzed in two stages with SERVQUAL method. In the first stage, satisfaction was measured based on the survey data of 280 patients who received service from three different family medicine centers. In the second stage, satisfaction was measured based on the survey data of 80 patients who received service from three different family medicine centers and using e-Nabız. As a result of the analysis, it was identified that modularised health services can influence customer satisfaction.
There is an increasing competition between companies for their survival in today's business environment. Not only time but also cost parameters affect the company's sustainability performance. Logistics as one of the core operations of companies has a large share on expenses. Transport, warehousing, administration, packaging, and other indirect costs constitute the main cost values of logistics. Especially product damages caused by incorrect packing and transportation leads to extra expenditures to the companies and damages their reputation due to the customer dissatisfaction. In order to avoid such situations, proper level of packaging for protection, transportation conditions, features of the product like fragility, compactness, must be selected and matched correctly. On the other hand, some external factors such as temperature and humidity, which affect the quality of cardboard, also need to be considered in the production phase. In this study, a Design of Experiment methodology is performed to determine the suitable conditions for increasing the strength of the corrugated cardboard box that is used by a Glassware Company operating in Turkey. 3 k full factorial design approach is implemented for the analysis and box compression test is used for measurement. The discussed factors and the interactions of the factors were evaluated with the help of Minitab software.
