This research paper aims at finding whether the students ability in listening can be improved by activating students' prior knowledge. The research conducted at English education study program of faculty of Tarbiyah and education of UIN Alauddin Makassar. This research applied cluster random sampling method. The research data were collected using listening test. It was given at pretest and posttest to know the students' achievement on listening. The data got during research was analyzed by t test. The finding of the study indicated that the experimental group was higher than that of control group. The result of the hypothesis testing showed that the difference of average score was significant (0.000 < 0.05). This means that there was an improvement of students' achievement after being exposed by activating their prior knowledge. It implies that activating students' prior knowledge can improve students' listening skill.
This paper explains about the types of teachers" talk in classroom interaction. This research was case study. In this research, the writer applied Descriptive Research Design which applied observation method. It aimed to gain the data that were observed during Teaching and learning process. The data were presented by analyzing the teacher talk and the speech act used by the informant. The source of data was the lecturer of ICP FMIPA UNM Makassar. The instrument of this study was observation where the writer used video cam to record and shoot the speech of the lecturer and also transcribing it. This research instrument was applied to acquire the data about teacher talk and speech act used by the lecturer at ICP FMIPA UNM Makassar. The result of the research shows that there are some types of teachers" talk performed by the lecturer during classroom interaction, they are greeting student, reviewing the previous material, introducing the new material, giving direction and instruction, encouraging and motivating, giving advice and closing the class.
ESP course design has grown to become one of the most prominent areas of EFL teaching since the early 1960's. It is a phenomenon that grew out of a number of covering trends. Nowadays there are many courses are offered in ESP areas. There has been several approaches in designing course but each of them has weakness and strengthens. This article aims at finding new approaches in ESP course design that integrate all the needs that the course. It integrates three component of need analysis, PSA, TSA, and LSA, and integrated source of data-stakeholder, learner, teacher, and expert. Each of the steps of integrated approach integrate all component needed. ABSTRAK:ESP disain telah menjadi salah satu bidang yang paling menjadi pusat perhatian dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing sejak awal 1960. Isu ini menjadi fenomena yang terus berkembang dan melahirkan berbagai kecenderungan. Dewasa ini ada banyak kursus yang ditawarkan dalam bidang ESP. Telah banyak pendekatan yang digunakan untuk mendisain kursus ESP namun menurut hemat penulis pendekatan-pendekatan tersebut memiliki kelemahan dan kelebihan. Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mengintegrasikan berbagai pendekatan untuk memenuhi semua kebutuhan dalam kursus ESP. Pendekatan ini akan mengingtegrasikan tiga komponenan analisis kebutuhan PSA, TSA dan LSA. Pendekatan ini juga akan mengintegrasikan sumber data yang dibutuhkan dalam menganalisis kebutuhan yakni dari stakeholders, pembelajar, guru, dan ahli. Setiap langkah dalam disainnya akan mengintegrasikan setiap komponen yang dibutuhkan.
The objective of the research is to find out whether or not video blog can improve the speaking ability of the students of English Education Department of FTK UINAM in academic year 2017/2018. The researcher applied pre-experimental method, with one group pretest and posttest design which employed speaking test to find out the students’ speaking performance in terms of accuracy. The sample consisted of 20 students used purposive sampling technique taken from the population of the second semester students of Sulawesi Flight. The result of the data analysis indicated that there was significant difference of students’ speaking performance before and after being trained through video blog. It is proved by result of statistical analysis of the level significance 0.05 with degree of freedom (df) = N-1 = 20-1 = 19 which indicated that t-test value of final score I speaking ability (13.309) was greater than t-table (2.093). Therefore, video blog can improve speaking performance of the students.
This research is aimed to analyze the need of Biology Education Department Students at UIN Alauddin Makassar. Based on the preliminary study, the researcher found that English subject on Biology Education does not have a specific syllabus and also the material is not through the need analysis based on priorities needed by students of Biology Education Department. The research design used in this study was survey method. This need analysis comprises of Target Situation Analysis, Present Situation Analysis, and Learning Needs. The procedures included analyzing need by spreading questionnaire and conduct an interview. The result of this research shows that students of Biology Education Department needs more specific English material and need English reading skills more than other skills. It implies that the lecturer should design material related to the students need to fulfill their needs.
