Background:In providing care for psychiatric patients, caregivers play a critical role. Increased caregiver's burden may increase their susceptibility to mental disorders and demonstrate submissive behavioral patterns, which are one of the least efficient coping strategies and may have a mediating effect on future depression. Aim: A study designed for exploring the relation between the burden of caregiving, submissive behaviors, and depressive symptoms among caregivers of psychiatric patients. Subjects and Method: The study used a descriptive correlational research design. 148 caregivers of psychiatric patients at the time of the visit from the inpatient department and also from the outpatient clinics in Port-Said Psychiatric Health Hospital were included in the study. To gather the necessary data, three instruments were used. Instrument I: Zairt Care Giver Burden Scale, Instrument II: Submissive Acts Scale, Instrument III: Beck Depression Inventory, additionally, personal and clinical data questionnaire. Results: According to the findings, the majority of psychiatric patients' caregivers had a severe level of burden, more than half of them had a high level of submissive behavior, and almost all of them had a severe level of depression. Conclusion: A statistically significant positive correlation was found between caregiving burden, submissive behaviors, and depressive symptoms among the studied caregivers of psychiatric patients at p ≤ 0.05. Recommendations: Appropriate interventions could reduce the burden on caregivers and teach effective coping approaches which had a beneficial impact on depressive symptoms among caregivers of psychiatric patients.

Background: Social support is an important element in the recovery of clients with psychiatric disorders. There is a lack of studies investigating the relative impact of factors related to social support. Disentangling these could enhance recovery for psychiatric patients. Aim: The current study intended to explore the relation between perceived social support and recovery among patients with psychiatric disorders. Subjects and Method: Design: A descriptive correlational research design was used. Setting: Port Said Psychiatric Health and Addiction Treatment Hospital. Subjects: The studied subjects compromised 90 patients with psychiatric disorders. Tools: Data were collected by the use of three tools namely, a personal and clinical data questionnaire, a Multidimensional scale of perceived social support, and a Recovery assessment scale domains and stages. Results: Most of the psychiatric patients in this study had low perceived social support. Participants had a mean total recovery score of 76.10 ± 20.08. Conclusion:It can be concluded from the present study that there was a positive statistically significant correlation between perceived social support and recovery for psychiatric patients. Recommendations: Enhancing social support while caring for psychiatric patients is recommended to regain recovery. Further studies are needed to improve recovery for psychiatric patients.
Background: Thalassemia a serious, life-limiting disease that can be life-threatening and cause great disruption in all dimensions of life. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate stress, anxiety and depression in adolescents with thalassemia. Subjects and Method: Design: A descriptive research design was utilized. Setting: Pediatric Hospital in Mansoura University and an inpatient department of El-Tadamon Hospital in Port-Said city. Subjects: The studied subjects consisted of 112 adolescents whom selected from above mentioned settings. Tools: Data were collected through Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS21), in addition to personal and clinical data questionnaire. Results: The study revealed that, approximately half of the studied adolescents (48.2%) had extremely severe level of stress, more than half of them (54.5%) had extremely severe level of anxiety, and less than one quarter of them (23.2%) had extremely severe level of depression. Conclusion: Adolescents suffering from thalassemia are exposed to multiple health problems especially what related to psychological and emotional dimensions represented in severe anxiety and stress. Recommendations: The main recommendation was designing and applying continuous educational programs for adolescents with thalassemia regarding their disease to maintain compliance to the therapeutic regimen and prevent negative impacts of thalassemia on their psychological status. These programs should be led by health professionals.
Health-related stigma is a common phenomenon worldwide. The stigma associated with mental illness is widespread. Stigma is an important barrier to mental health treatment and recovery. Aim: This study aims to determine level of internalized stigma of mentally ill patients and to identify factors associated with high level of internalized stigma of mentally illness. Study Design: quantitative descriptive cross sectional study was used. Setting: This study was carried out at National Center for Mental Health-Fhais Hospital-Jordan. Sample: convenient sample (All available patients with depressive disorders, bipolar mood spectrum disorders, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders. at age of 18 years and above. An estimated sample size was estimated about 105 patients which represents approximately of the total number of patient in National Center for Mental Health-Fhais Hospital). Data collection tool: Data was collected through a structured Interviewing questionnaire which composed from two parts. First Part: Personal Health Questions Second Part: Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale. Results: One hundred and five participants participated in the study. The majority of them aged between 15-45 years old and only 22.9% of them were between 46-60 years old. Overall, stigma total score was also closed to the middle point. The intercorrelation between stigma domains it is evident that the first four domains (alienation, stereotype endorsement, discrimination experience, and social withdrawal) had a significant correlation with the stigma total score. Conclusion: Internalized stigma is a major problem among persons with mental illness at National Center for Mental Health-Fhais Hospital-Jordan. Internalized stigma has the potential to substantially affect adherence to medication and is likely to affect the recovery process.
