During a recent lesson, a classroom of Grade 5 students realized a basic concept in mathematics and science, a concept not often achieved by adults. The arbitrary nature of zero is a point not even mentioned in the traditional classroom; however, these pupils (not exceptional children) “discovered” the idea themselves during a session conducted in accordance with some in-service materials for elementary school teachers prepared by Dr. Robert Davis of the Madison Project.1
