It is well documented that supervisees of color often report negative experiences in cross-cultural supervisory relationships, which can stem from poorly addressed or overlooked racial dynamics. As an illustration of this line of research, this article examines the training experience of a Black female clinical psychology trainee, her White supervisor, and her Afro-Latinx client. With the support of an additional supervisor who made space for this trainee to process the complicated dynamics unfolding and modeled the kind of multicultural consciousness necessary when working in cross-racial dynamics, this trainee developed strategies and shares lessons learned when working through cross-racial impasses. This case study may enrich the training experience for trainees, supervisors, and training programs alike. Most important, this article argues for the importance of integrating a multicultural orientation into the supervisory relationship.
