Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is associated with both local and systemic inflammatory processes via the aberrant regulation of inflammatory pathways and imbalances in several mediators of inflammation. Cytokines, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin (IL)-1B, IL-6, IL-17, IL-18, rheumatoid factor, anti-cyclic citrullinated protein, C-reactive protein (CRP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) have been used in diagnosing and tracking the progression of RA. The primary objective of this review is to identify and summarize which specific dietary patterns and nutritional interventions go beyond symptom management to improve the response to known inflammatory cytokines and possibly decrease markers of inflammation in the RA disease process. Analysis of the 41 identified publications demonstrated that certain dietary patterns, the consumption of specific macronutrients, and supplementation with herbals or other compounds have shown some effect on improving cytokine profiles in patients with RA. This review illustrates the importance of proper patient education on the anti-inflammatory and potential protective impacts substantial dietary change may have on the disease progression and symptoms of RA. Identifying nutritional interventions and dietary patterns that improve the inflammatory cytokine profile, and therefore disease progression and inflammatory comorbidities of RA will help further focus research on treatments that may provide a better overall improvement in quality of life for RA patients by focusing on the root cause inflammatory processes that affect not only joint destruction but also depression-rated disability. This review further notes that while depression is commonly found in patients who suffer from chronic illnesses, it is especially prevalent in the RA population. The pathology of depression is associated with systemic inflammation, which is a known outcome of RA and may explain this strong association. Cytokines IL-6, IL-1, and TNF-α, known mediators involved in the progression of RA, are strongly associated with stress-related disorders including depression and anxiety. The presence of these cytokines is also correlated with the severity and duration of depression. This may signal a potential use of cytokines in diagnosing and following the progression of depression not only in patients with RA but also others. Given the statistics presented on depression and suicide in patients with RA, and the shared inflammatory pathway between the two diseases, depression and suicide screening scales should be included along with analysis of inflammatory markers and disease activity scores (DAS) in any future RA study.
The purpose of the study was to determine whether there was a relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and levels of anxiety, depression, and overall mental well-being. The Mediterranean diet is a popular, healthy diet, aimed to promote wellness and reduce chronic illness. In order to determine the relationship between MD and mental well-being, 100 participants consented to complete an online survey to analyze their adherence to MD, along with levels of anxiety and depression. The validated questionnaires of the 14-item Questionnaire of Mediterranean diet Adherence, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) assessments were used to analyze each participant. To evaluate the results of the study, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient analysis was used to identify relationships between MD, depression, and anxiety. There was a significant negative correlation, indicating that MD adherence is associated with reduced depression and anxiety.
Background: Food insecurity is thought to be a prevalent yet misunderstood problem among college/university students. There is limited evidence regarding the prevalence of food insecurity in this population, and even less among private institutions of higher education. Food insecurity in college/university students can have harmful effects on students' academic performance and health. The aim of this study was thus to examine food security among college/university students and assess variables which may be associated with it.Methods: Cross-sectional data were collected during October-November 2021 from undergraduate, graduate, and professional students at a large private university in Florida, United States using an anonymous, selfadministered online questionnaire that included the Validate U.S. Department of Agriculture Household Food Security Six-item index and select sociodemographic variables. Point-biserial correlation coefficient analysis was conducted to identify correlations between the scores on the U.S. Household Food Security Sixitem Index and sociodemographic variables. Data were analyzed using SPSS v.27 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY).Results: Among the 1,316 students who completed the questionnaire, 34% (n=447) reported being "food insecure" (scores between 2 and 6), with higher scores indicating more low food security. In addition, there was a weak but statistically significant correlation between identifying as a first-generation college/university student and greater food insecurity. Conversely, current employment and receiving financial aid from family were both weakly, yet statistically significantly correlated with less food insecurity. Conclusion:Results from this study may help raise awareness regarding university students at risk for low food security and understand certain socioeconomic variables associated with high levels of food insecurity. More research may be needed to help direct focused intervention efforts such as food assistance programs and on-campus food pantries to ameliorate food insecurity in college/university students.
The aging of an organism is hallmarked by systemic loss of functional tissue, resulting in increased fragility and eventual development of age-related neurodegenerative, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and neoplastic diseases. Growing scientific evidence points to mitochondrial dysfunction as a key contributor in the aging process and subsequent development of age-related pathologies. Under normal physiologic conditions, the body removes dysfunctional mitochondria via an autophagic process known as mitophagy. Urolithin A (UA), a metabolite produced when gut microflora digests the polyphenol compounds ellagitannin and ellagic acid, is a known inducer of mitophagy via several identified mechanisms of action. The primary objective of this scoping review is to identify and summarize the clinical relevance of UA supplementation in the prevention of age-related pathology and diseases. A computer-assisted literature review was performed using PubMed and EMBASE for primary source research articles examining UA supplementation and aging-related pathologies. A total of 293 articles were initially identified from a database search, and 15 articles remained for inclusion in this review, based on predetermined criteria. Analysis of the 15 identified publications demonstrated that UA holds potential as a dietary intervention for slowing the progression of aging and preventing the development of age-related disease. This review also illustrates the potential role that mitochondrial health and inflammation play in the progression of age-related pathology. Identifying the clinical relevance of UA supplementation in the prevention of age-related pathology and diseases will help further the focus of research on treatments that may improve the longevity and quality of life in patients at risk for these comorbidities.
