The oxidation of hydrazine at a mercury or oxide-coated platinum electrode yields nitrogen as the principal product. Under some conditions, however, ammonia also is formed as a result of the dimerization of diimide. A mechanism for the process is suggested : though generally similar t o the accepted mechanism for the reaction of hydrazine with a two-electron chemical oxidizing agent, it also serves t o explain the effects of such variables as PH and chloride-ion concentration on the extent of the dimerization reaction. scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
