Reaction of MgCIR(OEt2) [R = CH(SiMe,),] with GeC12-dioxane in OEt2 yields the bright yellow crystalline Ge2R4[having a trans-folded C2,., Ge2C4 framework with a fold angle of 32", a germanium environment intermediate between pyramidal and planar (sum of angles at Ge = 3487, and a GeGe bond length of 2.347(2) A (ca. 4% shorter than in elemental germanium)], which behaves chemically as a singlet germylene GeR2.There has been much recent interest in thermally stable compounds having a 'double bond' between two main group atoms other than carbon, nitrogen, or a chalcogen, the dimetallenes. We define these as the heavy atom congeners of the olefins R'2C=CR'2, azo compounds R'N=NR', or Schiff bases R'2C=NR''. They are thus binuclear molecules of
The reaction of GaC13 or InCl, with the sterically hindered Li[CH(SiMe3)z] (LiR) yields white crystalline MR,, whereas InC13 with Li(CHPhz) gives In, Ph2CH2, and (PhZCH),. Treatment of InC13 with LiR (in a 1:l or 2:l ratio) in diethyl ether also gave InR3 and not an alkylindium(II1) chloride. Addition of Li[N(SiMe,),] to InBr or InCl in Et20 or LiR to InBr in Et,O at low temperature gives In, with RH + Rz as the organic coproducts in the LiR experiment. Irradiation of B(Cl)R2 with [EtNCHZCH2N(Et)C], in pyridine in the cavity of an ESR spectrometer yields a broad signal, g,, = 2.0034, which is persistent at 30 OC, and is believed to be due to (BRz--)(NC5H5+). The structure of the crystalline In[CH(SiMe3)z]3 has been determined by X-ray crystallography. It crystallizes (with disordered EtzO solvent) in the space group P31c with a = b = 16.302 (6) A, c = 8.890 (3) A, and 2 = 2. The structure was solved by heavy-atom methods and refined to R = 0.032 and R, = 0.041 for 1022 observed reflections. The crystal consists of discrete monomer molecules: the In atom is three-coordinate and lies 0.191 A above the symmetry-related carbon atoms C(1), with CInC angles of 119.3 (2)' and a rather long In-C( 1) bond length of 2.196 ( 6 ) A. The compound is of interest as the first crystallographically authenticated monomeric, heavy group 3 metal trialkyl.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
