PurposeThe study aims at estimating the shadow economy (SE) using the method of demand for currency in Palestine for the period 2008–2018 by studying the relationship between a group of variables that affect the ratio of money traded outside the banking system to the money supply in the broad sense.Design/methodology/approachThe study has adopted analytical and descriptive research methods to estimate SE in Palestinian territories. The data has been obtained from the inflation reports issued by the Palestinian Monetary Authority for ten years, from 2008 to 2018. A standard model was constructed using EViews version 8 for statistical data processing after converting the annual data to quarterly data.FindingsThe authors demonstrated that the size of the SE in Palestinian territories has varied over time, and the annual average of its size during the study period reached about $1764.893 (in millions). This amount constitutes about 15.5% of the gross domestic product. The study provides recommendations for reducing the size of the SE in Palestinian territories.Practical implicationsThe current study shows that shadow economics could significantly matter for economic policy design by policymakers.Originality/valueThis study deals directly with Tanzi’s “estimation of shadow economy in Palestinian territories” concept and its impact on economic policies.
The study aims to identify the impact that debt structure has on the financial performance of the organizations listed on the Palestinian Exchange (PEX). The sample of the study consists of 41 companies listed in the PEX, excluding the banking sector. The descriptive method is used, in addition to model measurement, to analyze the panel data using the multiple-regression method. The study concludes that the ROA increases when long-term debts are used for financing the assets in the insurance, investment, and industrial sectors. On the other hand, in the service sector, the ROA is negatively affected by the use of long-term debt, and only the industrial companies’ ROA is significantly affected by the total debt. Furthermore, the study finds that the ROA of companies in the insurance and investment sectors is positively impacted by short-term debts. The main recommendation is that companies in the insurance, industrial, and investment sectors should depend on properly balanced long-term debts to increase their revenue.
This study aimed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the Palestinian Public Universities and their opportunities and the threats they face, and the role that strategic planning has in sustainable development, the study used the descriptive analytical method, the study population was all the administrative and academic employees in the Palestinian public universities (PTUK and Al-Istiqlal university) with a total of 923 employees, a sample of 278 employees was taken based on, a questionnaire was developed to collect data on the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats and development strategies and was distributed on the study sample. The study used Structural Equations Modeling (SEM) to analyze the data using the advanced statistical program Smart PLS-3, the study concluded that the Palestinian public universities take into consideration the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats in the development of their strategies and administrators and academics participate in developing the Palestinian public universities strategic plan. The study recommended that the Palestinian public universities should provide new programs needed by the Palestinian market, in partnership with the local community and the commercial and industrial sectors, and to develop a plan for open and E-education and developing programs that guarantee the efficiency of outputs, in partnership with virtual universities that have long experience in such programs, and to support scientific research within the universities. .
The importance of the study stems from both theory and practice. In theory, it is hoped that this study will contribute to the attention of researchers to conduct further applied studies in this important field, in addition to administrative literature. For this reason, it is rare for local Palestinian studies to be conducted in this context, despite the efforts of some local studies on knowledge management but not their reflection on organizational innovation. In practical terms, its importance derives from the fact that it is conducted on an important and vital sector in the Palestinian economy, namely, the public sector, for the sector's effective efforts to develop the Palestinian society in various fields.
