The biochemical composition of red seaweeds, Catenella repens was investigated in this present study along with subsequent analysis of relevant physico-chemical variables. In this study, the relationship between the nutritive components of this species and the ambient environmental parameters was established. Protein content varied from 2.78 ± 0.30% of dry weight (stn.3) to 16.03 ± 0.96% of dry weight (stn.1) with highest values during monsoon. The protein levels were positively correlated with dissolved nitrate content and negatively correlated with water temperature (except stn.3) and salinity. Carbohydrate content of this species varied significantly (p < 0.05) during pre-monsoon between stations and the values showed positive relationship with salinity and surface water temperature. In contrast to carbohydrate, lipid concentration was lowest in values and varied very slightly between seasons and stations. Astaxanthin content of the seaweed species was greater in pre-monsoon than monsoon and post-monsoon in all the selected stations. Compared with the three seasons, samples of red seaweed collected in pre-monsoon has high carbohydrate-astaxanthin in contrast to protein-lipid which showed high values during monsoon. Statistical analysis computed among the environmental and biochemical parameters suggests the potential role played by the abiotic parameters on biosynthetic pathways of seaweed. This paper also highlights the influence of the nutritional quality of water that can be used for mass cultivation of Catenella repens.
Fish guild structure along a longitudinally-determined ecological zonation of Teesta, an eastern Himalayan river in West Bengal, India.-The Eastern Himalaya Biodiversity Hotspot contains exceptional freshwater biodiversity and ecosystems that are of vital importance to local and regional livelihoods, but these are under threat from the developmental and anthropogenic pressures arising from the 62 million people living in the area. Therefore, monitoring the riverine health and considering future conservation approach, the study of fish biodiversity plays a significant role in this region. The River Teesta in the Brahmaputra basin in India forms one of the major rivers in the Eastern Himalayas. In the present investigation, we studied ecological fish guilds as they can enhance the usefulness of fish zonation concepts and serve as tools to assess and manage the ecological integrity of large rivers. We classified fish species according to their water flow preference and spawning substrate preference. Ten spawning habitats were identified, occurring in three water flow guilds. The most widely preferred habitat in upstream zones was lithophils while in lower stretches it was lithopleagophils. On applying predictions of the River Continuum Concept, our results indicated the presence of a zonation pattern based on fish species assemblage and their ecological attributes along the longitudinal stretch of the Teesta River in west Bengal. Along the longitudinal stretch of the river, species richness increased downstream, with maximum richness in the mid-reaches. However, species richness decreased further downstream. The number of ecological guilds also increased downstream, and there were clear shifts in the structure of the guilds.
A short term laboratory feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the importance of algae based value added feed for the popular ornamental fish Carassius auratus (Gold fish). The feed was tested against Daphnia -the conventional feed used for Goldfish. Fresh algal biomass of Nostoc ellipsosporum and Navicula minima were mixed with daphnia to formulate the value added feed and proximate composition of feeds were analyzed. The experimental feed showed significantly higher protein (71.24% ±0.3), lipid (33.47%±0.2), and carotenoid (6.41%±0.13) (Pd"0.05), and increased level of amino acids (4.2%±0.1) and carbohydrate (14.72%±0.2) content than the control feed. Similarly the fishes fed with experimental feed showed 2 fold increase in protein, glycogen and carotenoid level as compared to the control fishes. Morphometric study also showed significant Body weight Gain (3.52%±1.2) and Specific growth rate (0.87±0.41) together with high Protein Productive value (0.051±0.14), Protein effficiency ratio (0.074±0.05) and low Feed conversion ratio (0.024±0.03) in experimental fishes which signifies better utilization of feed by the fishes. The VAF (Value added feed) fed fishes showed positive results in both morphometry and carcass proximate composition. Differences in body weight gain and Feed conversion ratio together with increased protein, glycogen and carotenoid K O LK ATA RESEARCH ARTICLE levels were significant than the control fishes. The colouration of the gold fishes induced by algal carotenoids was more bright and vibrant indicating high market value.
