Two years after the Great Sumatra‐Andaman earthquake the 3.1 m WSW coseismic displacement at Port Blair, Andaman Islands, had increased by 32 cm. Postseismic uplift initially exceeded 1 cm per week and decreased to <1 mm/week. By 2007 points near Port Blair had risen more than 20 cm, a 24% reversal of coseismic subsidence. Uplift at eight GPS sites suggests a gradual eastward shift of the coseismic neutral axis separating subsidence from uplift. Simulations of the GPS postseismic displacements as viscoelastic relaxation of coseismic stress change and as slip on the plate interface indicate that slip down‐dip of the seismic rupture dominates near‐field deformation during the first two years. Postseismic slip beneath the Andaman Islands released moment equivalent to a magnitude Mw ≥ 7.5 earthquake, and the distribution suggests deep slip in the stable frictional regime accelerated to catch up to the coseismic rupture.
Vitiligo is an autoimmune depigmenting skin disease characterised by loss of melanocytes wherein oxidative stress is proposed to be the initial triggering factor with subsequent immune dysregulation. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship, if any, between the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), markers of oxidative damage and circulating cytokines in patients with active vitiligo. The generation of ROS in erythrocytes and neutrophils was significantly higher in patients with active vitiligo than healthy controls. Alongside, markers of oxidative stress-mediated damage namely lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and protein carbonylation were evaluated. Patients with active vitiligo demonstrated increased lipid and DNA damage but minimal protein damage. There was a significant decline in the free radical scavenging capacity of active vitiligo cases. A positive correlation existed between baseline levels of ROS and lipid peroxidation as also DNA damage. Patients with active vitiligo demonstrated an increase in several proinflammatory (IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, IFN-γ and IL-8) and some anti-inflammatory/immunoregulatory (IL-5 and IL-10) cytokines. Importantly, the levels of IFN-γ and IL-10 consistently correlated with the generation of ROS, markers of damage and their free radical scavenging capacity. Taken together, patients with active vitiligo demonstrated an enhanced generation of ROS in erythrocytes and neutrophils which mediated lipid peroxidation, DNA damage and coupled with a decline in their antioxidant capacity created a pro-oxidant milieu that favoured tissue damage and potential generation of neoantigens, accounting for disease progression.
Severe patient injury was associated with exposure to aged cellulose acetate membranes of dialyzers, allowing cellulose acetate degradation products to enter the blood. Clinicians should be aware that aged cellulose acetate membranes may cause severe adverse reactions.
Palisaded encapsulated neuroma (PEN) is an infrequent benign cutaneous neural tumor, which usually presents as solitary, asymptomatic, papule or nodule, often localized on the faces, around the orifices, in middle age with no sex preponderance. Rarely, it can be multiple. Both solitary and multiple lesions are not associated with neurofibromatosis or multiple endocrine neoplasica syndrome type 2B (MEN 2B). We hereby report, a rare case of multiple cutaneous PEN in a 30-year-old female who presented with multiple asymptomatic soft-to-firm papules and nodules in a dermatomal distribution on the face along the supply of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve with no signs of neurofibromatosis or MEN 2B.
Empyema thoracis, is a rare cause of respiratory distress in neonates. Only a few cases of neonatal empyema thoracis are described in medical literature. Empyema thoracis is not a well known entity in the neonates. It is fulminant with rapid progression with a high mortality. Compounding the problem is its uncertain etiopathogenesis and lack of definite treatment guidelines. We shall describe one case of neonatal empyema in a newborn aged five days caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The neonate died subsequently.
