This study was carried out in perception to the demand that in this 4.0 era, Indonesian students should be proficient in English. Hence, in Indonesia, English has been taught and learnt since elementary school level up to tertiary level of education. This study aims to examine non EFL students' English learning strategies in ESP learning; especially regarding the types of strategies used most often and the tendency of non EFL students to use these strategies. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study method involving 37 Medical Laboratory Technician students. They were selected by stratified random sampling. The instrument used is a questionnaire adapted from Oxford (1990). The results of study showed that non EFL students were not very aware of the use of language learning strategies in learning English as a foreign language because they rarely used them. However, non EFL students had priority affective strategy (24.3%), social strategy (22.3%), followed by compensation strategies (19.3%), cognitive (11.4%), metacognitive (14.3%), and memory strategies (8.4%). Based on the research results, it is expected that non EFL students can recognize and learn foreign language learning strategies comprehensively, which must be applied continuously to achieve success.
Educators use online learning in the teaching process during the COVID-19 epidemic. Basic interactive online learning methods, such as synchronous learning, are available as a face-to-face learning process via online media. It is necessary to have learning media that can be used during learning Maritime English. The kind of platform that will be used in this study namely Marlins. This study aimed to investigate the impact of synchronous learning in teaching Maritime English through marlins English in cadets’ learning outcomes in the industrial revolution 4.0. This study was a quantitative study using a pre-experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. Collecting data applied Marlins English with reliability of 0.788 in Alpha Cronbach. The number of samples was 24 cadets. Multiple choice items and descriptions made up the data gathering instrument. A one-sample t-test, a percentage test, and an independent sample t-test were employed to analyze the data. The results of the study show that there is a mean score of 1,250, and the data table of Paired Samples Test Shows Sig. value of (2- tailed) (0.001) < (0.05) and value of t count of (-4.440) > t table (23; 0.05) is 1.713, so that Ho is rejected. From 24 cadets of the Engine Department of class 3A at Polytechnics of Makassar Merchant, before and after the treatment is significant. For further researchers, it is expected that they can carry out further research with more in-depth coverage related to online learning through synchronous learning.
Indonesia has implemented online learning as part of its education reforms in an effort to contain the spread of the Covid – 19 virus. Study participants' perceptions of online learning during the Covid-19 pandemic are examined in this research. It was a descriptive quantitative study. Questionnaires (Google forms) and in-depth interviews were used to collect data. One hundred fifty-five cadets responded to the survey. Covid–19 pandemic showed that the cadets had an excellent view of online learning. Amid this pandemic, they discovered that online learning was helpful but not entirely efficient. Online learning by lecturers was effective, efficient, varied, helped cadets understand the material, independent learning, and increased students' involvement in learning activities. Additionally, this study gathered information from students in the form of constructive feedback on how to improve online learning. Covid – 19 pandemic cadets also discovered a number of obstacles related to online learning, such as barriers to students' accessing online learning platforms. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for further research into the extent of the digital divide is necessitated by this study.
The purpose of this study is to find out 1) to find out the profile of English lecturers' personality competence at maritime schools, 2) to describe the profile of students' learning motivation at maritime schools, 3) to analyze the effect of the lecturer's personality competence toward the students' learning motivation at naval schools. The research uses a quantitative method with the implementation of an ex post facto method. The population in this study is all fourth-semester students in Sekolah Tinggi Ilmu Pelayaran (STIP) Jakarta, Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran (PIP) Semarang, and Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran (PIP) Makassar. The sampling technique used a simple random sampling technique. The independent and dependent variable of this study is lecturers' personality competence and students' learning motivation, respectively. The data of lecturers' personality competence data and students' learning motivation were collected by using questionnaires. Data were then analyzed using descriptive analysis. Partial regression analysis was used to determine the effect of variables synergistically from independent variables (lecturers' personality competence) on the dependent variable (students' learning motivation). The result shows that the three maritime schools indicate a high level of the lecturers' personality competence. The students' learning motivation is categorized in the high-level category. The personality competence influences the students' learning motivation in PIP Semarang. Unfortunately, the influence of personality competence on students' learning motivation at STIP Jakarta and PIP Makassar show a different pattern, or it does not mean they influence each other.
The ability to effectively communicate at work, home, and in life is probably one of the most important sets of skills a person needs. English as a tool of communication as standardized by International Maritime Organization (IMO), needs to be implemented in order to improve learning needs, cognitive and affective abilities, for self-confidence is considered to be a significant factor which influences the learners’ language performance. The purpose of this study is to find out the cadets’ level of self-confidence category in delivering marine communication on board and the causes of the level of the self-confidence. The research uses descriptive qualitative design. The participants of the research is deck and engine cadets semester IV from Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Makassar who were scheduled for practicing on the training ship. The variable of this study is the cadets’ self-confidence in delivering marine communication on board simulation. The data are collected through questionnaire, observational checklist and interview related to self-confidence of the cadets in delivering marine communication on board Training Ship Sultan Hasanuddin. The data from questionnaires were analyzed by scoring the positive and negative statement into Likert’s scale (strongly agree, agree, undecided, disagree, strongly disagree) and classified the level of sel-confidence by the score scale to determine The High Self-Confidence, Moderate Self-Confidence, and Low Self-Confidence. The results of the study show that there are three levels of cadets’ self-confidence in delivering marine communication on board simulation, they are categorized as high, moderate and low self-confidence. The cadets high self-confidence is caused by the feeling of excited to do simulation. Moderate self-confidence of cadets is caused by high motivation in English, but could not engage the indicators of people with self-confidence. However, Low self-confidence of cadets are caused by mispronunciation and unfamiliarity situation on board.
