The robustness or structural integrity of light steel framing and modular constructions is important because these are relatively new structural forms, in which the components have different forms of inter-connectivity in comparison with primary steel frames. There is an increased need to understand the sensitivity of these forms of construction to so-called accidental actions, including terrorist threats. Various forms of construction using light steel and modular technologies are identified and their implications for robustness are reviewed. A series of stressed skin tests on modular constructions is presented. These show that modules are able to span as deep beams with one longitudinal support removed with minimal displacements, indicating that the torsional stiffness of the ‘box’ provides a high level of robustness. Removal of a corner support again demonstrates the role that torsional action of the box plays in redistributing loads away from damaged sections of a structure. For light steel framing, multiple inter-connections provide robustness by tying action and alternative load paths in the event of one or more elements being severely damaged. For modular construction, a scenario-based approach is required in which modules are selectively removed and the horizontal and vertical forces in the connections between the modules can be calculated explicitly.
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to examine the dissatisfaction of library users and the manager of each federal university library vis-à-vis the complaint of the librarians working in those libraries on inadequate funding, lack of promotion, poor condition of service and lack of recognition which affected their career commitment. Design/methodology/approach -Questionnaires were used to gather data from a population of 381 librarians in the 24 federal university Libraries in Nigeria. A total of 363 of them responded and their questionnaires were found to be valid for analysis. The response rate achieved was 95.3 percent. Findings -The study found that job satisfaction has significant influence on career commitment of librarians working in the federal university libraries (F (9; 352) ¼ 11.058, p < 0.05). The study also revealed that demographic variables and job satisfaction accounted for 20 percent (adj. R 2 ¼ 0.2000) in variability of career commitment of the respondents.Research limitations/implications -The study ought to have generated data on demographic variables and job satisfaction as they affect career commitment of library paraprofessionals (library officers, library attendants and assistants) since they all carry essential library function. Practical implications -It is recommended that the library administrators and the managers of the university libraries should consider the demographic variables and job satisfaction of librarians when planning and making decisions on their career commitment. Social implications -The library managers and administrators in federal university libraries in Nigeria should formulate job satisfaction policies such as adequate provision of working facilities, provision of conducive working environment, work incentives (car loan, housing loan, study leave allowance, etc) for improving career commitment of their librarians Originality/value -The paper provides valuable information on the career commitment of librarians in federal university libraries in Nigeria.
Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to investigate socio-economic factors (such as gender, age, marital status, educational qualification, job tenure, monthly salary); job satisfaction and locus of control as they determine organizational commitment of records management personnel in Nigerian private universities. Design/methodology/approach -The research design adopted for the study was ex-post facto type. A questionnaire was used for data collection from a sample of 240 records management personnel from a population of 310 in 24 private universities in Nigeria. A total of 220 of these responded and the copies of their questionnaire were found valid for analysis. The response rate realized was 91.7 percent. Findings -The study revealed that there was significant multiple correlation between socio-economic factors, job satisfaction, locus of control and organizational commitment of the respondents. In addition, socio-economic factors, job satisfaction and locus of control significantly determined organizational commitment of the respondents. Practical implications -It is recommended that the administrators in private universities in Nigeria should take into consideration the socio-economic variables, job satisfaction and the locus of control of records management personnel when planning to improve their organizational commitment. Originality/value -The paper provides information on the organizational commitment of records management personnel in private universities in Nigeria.
Nowadays, an electronic health information management system (EHIMS) is crucial for patient care in hospitals. This paper explores the aspects and elements that contribute to the success of EHIMS in Nigerian teaching hospitals. The study adopted a survey research design. The population of study comprised 442 health information management personnel in five teaching hospitals that had implemented EHIMS in Nigeria. A self-developed questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. The findings revealed that there is a positive, close relationship between all the identified factors and EHIMS’s success: technical factors (r = 0.564, P < 0.05); social factors (r = 0.616, P < 0.05); organizational factors (r = 0.621, P < 0.05); financial factors (r = 0.705, P < 0.05); and political factors (r = 0.589, P < 0.05). We conclude that consideration of all the identified factors was highly significant for the success of EHIMS in Nigerian teaching hospitals.
This paper investigated information needs, accessibility and utilization of library information resources as determinants of psychological well-being of prison inmates in Nigeria. Survey research design of the correlation type was adopted. The stratified random sampling was used to select 2875 inmates from the population of 4,823 in 12 prisons with functional libraries. A questionnaire titled Information need, accessibility, utilization and psychological well-being of Prison Inmates was used to collect data on the sampled 2875 inmates out of which 2759 correctly completed questionnaire resulting in a response rate of 95.34%, were used in data analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics of percentages, mean and standard deviation and inferential statistics of correlation analyses. The study found that there was significant multiple correlation among information needs, accessibility to library information resources, utilization of library information resources and psychological well-being of the inmates (r=0.665.p≤ 0.05). Also, there was significant relationship between: psychological well-being and accessibility to library information resources by prison inmates (r=0.438; p≤ 0.05); utilization of library information resources (r= .410; p≤05), and information needs (r=.454; p≤ 05). Result also indicated that information needs, accessibility to library information resources and utilization of library information resources are very critical ingredients in determining the psychological well-being of prison inmates. Consequently, all stakeholders should endeavour to equip prison libraries with relevant and current information resources for improved psychological well-being of prison inmates. article.
