Adolescence is a very formative time. The individual goes through a phase of changing from a child to an adult.Mental health conditions account for almost 16% of the global burden of disease and injury in individuals belonging in the age group of 10-19 years and half of all these conditions start by 14 years of age. Various factors such as hormonal changes, academic performance, participation in extracurricular activities, family background, socio economic status, peer pressure, etc., can contribute to the level of stress perceived by the adolescent. Materials and Methodology:A total of 385 higher secondary school students (males and females) who signed the assent were included. The 3SQ was given to higher secondary school students (n=385) to assess the possible sources of stress. 3SQ represents 44 possible sources of stress in students identified from the literature divided in domains like academic, interpersonal, intrapersonal, group social, learning and teaching and teacher related stressors. Descriptive analysis of the data obtained was done.Result: Out of the 385 students, 29.13% reported for mild stress due to academic stressors and almost 7.21% reported for severe stress. 38.26% and 11.9% reported for mild and severe stress respectively due to interpersonal related stressors. Conclusion: Thus, the authors conclude that majority of the students reported to perceive mild to severe stress due to academic related stressors and interpersonal related stressors. They also perceived stress due to other factors but comparatively in a lesser amount.
An effective doctor-patient relationship helps increasing patient's compliance with the treatment, thereby improving his physical, functional and emotional status. Communication not only helps in creating a good inter-personal relationship and exchanging information but also in making treatment-related decisions. Physiotherapy interventions rely on a complex interplay of technical skill, communicative ability, and reflective capacity of the therapist to respond to the patient. It has been observed that the important aspect of communication, is often neglected due to time constraints within the curriculum. Also in India, the availability of structured guidelines to teach communication skills to medical professionals is an underresearched topic. The present study investigated the effectiveness of SEGUE framework (Set the stage, Elicit information, Give information, Understand the patient's perspective, End the encounter) for teaching communication skills in physiotherapy students. Aims: To study the effect of SEGUE framework on the communication skills of Physiotherapy students. Materials and Methods: Physiotherapy students(n=80) were assessed for their communication skills by the Likert responses of their patients to a self-structured patient feedback form. SEGUE Framework was taught to these students. The post-intervention assessment was carried out similarly. Results: There was a significant improvement in the patient responses post-intervention. Conclusion: We conclude that SEGUE Framework is effective in teaching communication skills in physiotherapy students.
CONTEXT: COVID-19 outbreak has disrupted the lives of many people. The lockdown imposed from March 2020 in India, a necessary step taken for containment of the coronavirus infection, also had its effect on students' social and academic life. Along with many individuals, the student population has also gone through a range of psychological and emotional reactions due to uncertainty, lack of financial stability, academic delay, lack of physical contact with family members, friends, and constant overloading of information via social media. AIMS: The study was conducted to determine the effects of the COVID-19 crisis on the mental health of physiotherapy students. SETTINGS: Community (online). DESIGN: Survey study-Questionnaire based. SUBJECT AND METHODS: An online survey was conducted via Google forms consisting of demographic data and Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS)-21 questionnaire (a shorter version of DASS41) having seven questions each subscale, i.e., depression, anxiety, and stress. The data were collected from June 22, 2020, to July 3, 2020. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Descriptive analysis of the data obtained was performed. RESULTS: A total of 275 physiotherapy students participated in the study. About 34.6% of students were found to have depression, 31.1% have anxiety, and 16% have stress in the range of mild, moderate, severe, and extremely severe. Majority were in mild category of depression, anxiety, and stress. 4th-year students were found to be more affected as compared to other students. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 crisis has affected the mental health of students.
