Peer observation of classroom and clinical teaching has received increased attention over the past decade in schools of nursing to augment student ratings of teaching effectiveness. One essential ingredient is the scale used to evaluate performance. A five-step systematic procedure for adapting, writing, and building any peer observation scale is described. The differences between the development of a classroom observation scale and an appraisal scale to observe clinical instructors are examined. Psychometric issues peculiar to observation scales are discussed in terms of content validity, eight types of response bias, and interobserver reliability. The applications of the scales in one school of nursing as part of the triangulation of methods with student ratings and the teaching portfolio are illustrated. Copies of the scales are also provided.
The most prevalent postmenopausal symptoms were vasomotor symptoms, which were more bothersome in African American women compared with white women. Factors associated with vasomotor symptoms included race, BMI, and dietary intake of fat calories. Implications for practice include increasing provider awareness to discuss vasomotor symptoms and the need for treatment in postmenopausal African American women. Further research to increase our understanding of racial differences and associated factors that influence the duration and intensity of vasomotor symptoms experienced by postmenopausal women is needed.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can have significant long-term health benefits in postmenopausal women, yet rates of HRT use are low, especially in low-income urban women. Previous research has revealed that knowledge of menopause is a key predictor of HRT use in this population. A descriptive cross-sectional survey of 215 perimenopausal and postmenopausal low-income urban women was carried out to characterize knowledge of menopause and HRT and factors associated with knowledge level. Sociodemographic characteristics, patterns of HRT use, and knowledge about menopause and HRT were collected through a structured interview. Results revealed a general lack of knowledge about menopause and HRT, particularly relative to heart disease and the role of HRT in prevention. Major independent predictors of increased knowledge (R2 = 0.31) were having talked with a healthcare provider about HRT, having at least a high school education, and being less than 60 years of age. These findings emphasize the key role of providers in educating this vulnerable population about menopause and HRT and the potential subsequent impact on HRT use.
The profession of physical therapy has undergone an evolution since its inception. Since the early 1900s it has grown from a technical training program to a doctorate level degree. Human anatomy courses remain a requirement for physical therapist educational curricula. However, changes in anatomy pedagogy have been trending within health profession educational models, leading to questions regarding which method is best for student learning. The objective of this study was to determine if anatomy instructional method used within physical therapist educational curricula impacted current anatomy knowledge. Licensed physical therapists were recruited to complete a demographic survey and a questionnaire to demonstrate their knowledge of anatomy topics. Anatomy topics included six regional components: (1) upper limb; (2) lower limb; (3) thorax and abdomen; (4) pelvis; (5) spine; and (6) head. Each regional component contained five questions regarding systemic subsets related to joints and osteology, muscles, nervous system, vasculature, and special areas (e.g., spatial orientations, structures within spaces, pathways of nerves). Within the thorax and abdominal region, data analysis indicated that the dissection instruction method, when compared to no laboratory instruction, led to statistically significant greater anatomical knowledge (P = 0.02). Dissection also showed greater means when compared to the no laboratory method (P = 0.02) and the prosection method in the head region (P = 0.01). However, the variance explained by instructional method was small. This study adds empirical evidence regarding current anatomy knowledge exhibited by physical therapists as the level of anatomical knowledge exhibited small differences based on instructional methods.
