Nursing homes have traditionally focused their care on three areas: basi c custodial servi ces (e.g., food and shelter), physical health care, and personal care such as grooming and toileting. Psychosocial servi ces have been conspicuously absent from the long-term care setting. Research has demonstrated success in a variety of long-term care settings, ranging from state hospitals to nursing homes, and with frail and demented patients. A range of group therapeutic options is available, including activities therapy, occupational therapy, reality orientation, remotivation, and behavioral therapy. These and other approaches are revi ewed and di scussed.
